The salvation Army has a specific office in Illinois that does Missing person searches- I think for free- any Salvation Army can give you phone # or address. Also I heard that if you write to the Social Security office and tell them everything you know about your brother and include a stamped letter that they will mail it for you to him. You could also try that tactic with the Ait Force- surley they wouldn't object delivering a letter to him?
Just say you don't need to be told where he is- you just want to get him a letter.

Wow! There are so many suggestions here I don't know where to start. I really appreciate it.
I'm a little worried that he won't want to see me after all these years. He may be carrying around a lot of hate or pain. Those thoughts have caused me to hesitate in the past. The farther I get from the Borg the more I miss him though. Funny how that works.

I'll try all the free stuff first. And thank you all for your help and support.

Find the nearest Mormon church and ask to use thier family tracing faculities, you may be able to come up with a Soc Security no. if not an address. They have some awesome records, and usually they have some people who are intrested in helping you find stuff.
I was amazed, I was with someone who tracked down thier long lost half cousin. Her grandfather had just took off to California and started a new life out there. No one had an inkling that he had become rich and started a new family out there. She discovered a whole new line of relatives she never knew existed. This took her several weeks but was worth it.

There is a service used by creditors, the law, etc. called a "skip tracer." You may be able to find your brother through the use of such a service. Um, from where was the birth announcement you received posted?

Good luck with the search tyydyy, I hope it works out - let us know how it turns out won't you?

I would think your brother would be glad to see you escape from the borg and get in touch.

There's one other thing you might try...a personal webpage. make sure it has his name, your name, and any other name he might recognize. (schools, clubs, hobby groups)

I was looking for a fan page for Siegfried and Roy. Couldn't find one through the usual search engines, which I thought was weird. Then I went directly to Homestead and Geocities and some others, did a search for their homepages and wammo---too many pages and groups and still wading through them all.

I would try a personal webpage through every homepage hoster there is. Maybe even a 10.00 a month page. If he isn't online, someone who knows him will be. You can do one page, and upload it over and over I think. If you are interested in that, there are some web developers here on this board that could direct you.

And be aware of kooks and cracks that might be attracted to this sort of thing.

If you are online, likely he or someone he knows is also. Lots of people do searches under their own name, just to see what's out there on them.

    Best wishes...

In 1975 a crack team of publishers was sentenced to death by a judicial commiteee. They promptly escaped from the cult and now live life on the run. If you have a problem ... and if you can find them ... maybe you can contact the A--postate Team"

Just an update to let those of you who have shown support what's goin' on. I have been downloading the marraige records in texas to try to find out his wife's name. That might help with the search. My internet connection is slow and the files are huge but I think I may get it tonight. In the meantime, I have done a search on the suggested people search sites and actually made a few phone calls. I talked to a couple of people who had the exact same name but weren't my brother. The search goes on.....................

    Thanks again.

The web page idea is good if he or anyone he knows sufs the net - you'd need to be sure it gets submitted to search engines though to make sure it is 'visible' ... it would be worth doing a search on web site promotion to learn ways to do this effectively but once you've got most of the content done I'm sure tjere are many here who could offer advice on optimising it.
