The Salvation Army is an evangelical church denomination, much like any other. Would the JWs accept help from any other church?

The Salvation Army is an evangelical part of the universal Christian Church with its own distinctive governance and practice. Its doctrine follows the mainstream of Christian belief and its articles of faith emphasise God’s saving purposes. For more information, visit these pages:

I'm just glad that Clyde had plenty of other ways to donate his time. When we first stopped going to meetings, we both talked about maybe attending another church--even let the Mormons visit us for a few weeks. Then we discovered there is a Moose Lodge near us. We are gradually getting involved in some of their charitable activites which includes helping the Salvation Army. Although we won't be doing any bell ringing, we can do lots of other things without coming under the radar of the elders.

Gary neal, I have always liked those scriptures. jws always try to twist them around to be spiritual but nothing

there indicates any such thing. I also like to use James 1:27 that part of pure religion is visiting the fatherless

and widows in their affliction. I have found that in my 60 or so years in this organization that most

jws are takers and not givers. The organization makes them that way. There are those few though

who are nice , caring, giving people . It boils down to , are you a christian or are you a jw.

jws are allowed to accept Christmas presents and help from the Red Cross but cannot give Christmas presents or donate to the Red Cross.

*** w59 12/1 p. 736 Questions From Readers ***Should we receive Christmas gifts, then what? It does not seem wise at such time to attack the institution of Christmas. Rather than refuse or return them, it would be better merely to express appreciation by word of mouth or letter or card; and, while wholly ignoring any reference to the holiday season, we could use the occasion to make some reference to our New World hope. It may even be advisable to wait until after the holiday season so as to further disassociate our expression of thanks from the pagan celebration.

My mother would always buy clothing from Salvation Army, literally hundreds of dollars at a time, but refuses to donate money or clothing to them.

Apparently donating clothing/money to them is supporting them and their wicked sinful false religion work. But buying from the shop is ok because it's spending money and getting stuff in return.

For want of a better phrase: FACEPALM.

Personally I always give clothes, furniture and whitegoods to them. If I can't use it, I know there's someone else who can.

When I was working at the Salvation Army's homeless shelter I heard many strange stories while working there but this topped all of them.

We had 2 female immigrants who check into the shelter. They were very low key, under the radar but sometimes we can spot things that others can't.

First thing I realized about them was that they were a couple as in lesbians. No problem for me but some of the other staff were horrified that they might actually be having sex in their room. This was a "Christian" setting and being gay was a huge no-no.

In talking to them a bit I also realized they were JWs. I asked them how could that work for them and they said they had been together for many years and stopped the sex when they became JWs. But they were still living together and had no plans on changing that.

I have to wonder how long they lasted as JWs

i heard the same guff about the
thrift store i utilized to dress my
4 children for years... it was a
    joint operation by volunteer
    ladies from area churches and
SOME of the proceeds went to
church projects but MOST of the
    money went to the women's
shelter, the library, a local clinic
    that offered free services one
    morning a week.... one uber-pioneer
took me to task and i just mentioned
i had seen her mother shopping there...

i also donate clothing and other items
to that store... convenient way to clean
    closets and attics!
