Last Thursday I posted about a woman in my town that was being held hostage at gunpoint by her ex-boyfriend. (She is the mother of my son's girlfriend ) the first news story is here :

    http://qconline.com/archives/qco/display.php?id=470723

She actually saved her own life ! The man had been drinking during the ordeal and in a weak moment laid the gun down for a second . Julie saw her chance and grabbed the gun and threw it out the window then fought with him and escaped from the apartment to the awaiting police . They then smoked him out with pepper spray bombs .

During the standoff he shot his gun over 50 times through out the apartment ruining furniture ,clothing ,personal belongings along with the walls, windows ,skylight ,and doors . He also used a knife ,hammer and crowbar .

After being free Julie was reunited with her kids right away . By Sunday she was right back at work as a waitress .That day her customers left her over $400.00 dollars in tips . Her employer has spoken out to the press about all that she lost and the community has risen to the occasion to help her .

The local computer shop took her computer in to repair and replace whatever is needed at no charge to her . Another shop sent a repair man to inspect her appliances and repair them if needed . A shop keeper gave her a brand new coat ,gloves and scarf along with a generous credit for any other clothes needed. Friends and people that barely knew her have volunteered to clean up the apartment until professionals can do repairs. A donation basket at the restrurant has netted over $2000.00 in gift cards and cash . Her son has been given gift cards at school as well !

I know for a fact several churches formed prayer groups to pray for her during the ordeal . I personally heard one of those prayers and it was the most heartfelt ,well thought out and spoken prayer I have heard .

I feel very lucky to live in such a caring community, and am constantly, pleasantly surprised at how truly loving so called 'worldly' people are compared to what I was led to believe growing up as a JW.

What about the local Jehovah's Witnesses have they made donations or offerings of help .......hear crickets in this space .........Nope

(The Witness at the place where my husband works could only make sarcastic remarks about her bad choices of being in a relationship with such a man ......Another man my husband works with made the comment how uncaring the witnesses remarks were .)

You will know them by the love they have.

I usually refer to them as the "Love Removal Machine"

(Cult fan--the band not the actual cult)

That's really heartwarming to hear how the community is supporting her in this time of need. I've never heard of JWs helping even their own, let alone a total stranger.

As for the JW at your husbands workplace, it's not surprising at all. They have nothing good to say at the best of times. I wouldn't be surprised if the local JWs were using this event as an introduction in their magazine peddling endeavors.

I hear the dueling banjos song playing. Dueling "My Worldy People are Better Than Your Worldly People" Stories. Ha!

    Great story.

Yes, but has anyone given her a pet lion? I think not! It is only by means of JWs and their complex numerology and unscriptural misinterpretation that anyone can hope to have a pet lion.

JWs have a special word to describe such loving, caring, generous, worldly people... "birdfood"!

Sheesh. I can't believe that anybody in or around the Geneseo Congregation could be so unkind and judgmental after what happened to one of their own just a couple months ago.

I'm not competing, but the small city I live in is known for two things:

    1. political infighting

    2. generosity. One of the biggest benefactors here is a bar. I can't tell you how many benefit dinners, dances, and dart and pool tornaments they've done for people with complicated circumstances such as adoption, illness, injury, etc. We have our own Santa who visits children at the hospital, sees every school student from K to sixth grade, and provides holiday dinner and gifts for several low income families all on private donations. The organizations do several activities for kids: 4th of July Committee raises funds for a fabulous fireworks display and has Family Fun Day with all kinds of free activities, lunch and prizes/the Sportsman's Club does a free annual fishing derby/the Kiwanis Club does a cake walk every Halloween/the Optimist Club does a free Breakfast with the Easter Bunny/the Girl Scout Service Unit does an annual Easter Egg Hunt/the commerce association does a Christmas parade and a huge festival with lots of free activities for kids. The veterans and churches get together to do a free Thanksgiving dinner and school supply giveaway. There's much more going on here, but you get the picture.

I'm here to defend the JW's......

I'm positive by this Saturday, probably after 10 AM, two JW's will come by her apartment and offer her two FREE magazines, plus a FREE home Bible study.
