Anyone know the real reason for moving the printing to Canada?

Didn't somebody post that probably Canada offers an easier social path for keeping their captive and practically unpaid work force in place? I.E. - free medical care, less restrictions on wage control, avoidance of workmans comp, etc...?

I'm listening to the July 19th, 2008 conference call on SixScreensoftheWatchtower... [yeah, I know, I'm waaay behind...]

This program discusses [among other things] the restrictive attitude of the Canadian gov't towards people trying to expose cultic behavior... Don't know just how accurate the program's descriptions of Canadian accomodation of the WTBTS is; if it is completely accurate, then Canada has just painted a target on the map for ALL cults... And made itself VERY ATTRACTIVE to the WTBTS...

Someone posted a thread on predictions; I PREDICT.... lemme put on my soothesayer's hat... Wait, that's 'new' light...

I PREDICT - that Canada will quickly accumulate a plethora of dangerous cults - think Branch Davidians, Moonies, Scientologists, and others who might even make JWs look relatively normal - UNTIL!! The really hits the (Someone else has a really good 'smiley' of that expression...)

Then, and only then, will Canada realize its mistake and tighten up security - and lose the "over-tolerant political correctness" attitude and put some CONTROLS in place... Hey, when dealing with HIGH-control groups, a gov't needs MORE CONTROL... [ducks, 'cause that statement WILL stimulate 'discussion'...]

    Pros in Canada:

healthcare, high multicultural diversity, lower labour wages (typically but depending on the city)

The Canadian program W5 did an expose on the JW's coverup of pedophiles not too long ago, so I don't think that the canadian press is easy going on any religious organization.

As for thr work force issue, they would h ave to follow the minimum wages regulations and the union and workplace safety issues that any company in their category would have to follow.

Thanks, Blondie, for posting those links... I liked Metatron's "Collapse of the Watchtower" thread... Wish there had been some way to highlight WTBTS' mistreatment of their older Bethelites to the Canadian gov't before the Canadians allowed them to move in... I'm SURE Canada will eventually rue the day they allowed that cult to squat like a toad in the Canadian landscape... Zid

I think the move totally out of Brooklyn is just a financial one, the high price for just about anything in that area costs more that anywhere else.

So its makes all the sense to sell off those properties and locate somewhere else.

They have already sold properties in Brooklyn that the WTS previously owned reaping high profits, to sellout and get out of there

which seems to be on their agenda. This is a religious publishing business of sorts, that many people forget once they walk into a Kingdom Hall.

The freedom of religion act might not be as strong as it is in the US but , its certainly here.

As for labor costs, minimum wage rates are higher here than down in the States.

Now health care is indeed cheaper here than the States so that may one of the reasons to move the printing manufacturing up here.

Its an expansion of the printing that they are already doing here not a total resetting up.

I've been researching southern Ontario as a retirement spot. Real estate is depressed around there right now because of the collapse of the auto industry. I understand it is even worse across the border in Detroit.

Now, Georgetown is a little farther north, but it is more centrally located in North America. It's only 400 miles to Wallkill. Real estate would definitely be cheaper in Canada.

It seems to be a wise economic decision.

I have my doubts about the future of the entire print industry, however, as people move online. In that respect, the Watchtower is woefully behind. Perhaps they may miss this next generation completely, other than the computer illiterate. A girl must live in hope.
