There are some good walks becoming more popular ; The Jack the Ripper Walk and The Ghost Walk are meant to be very good and there is a new Ghost/Haunted London Bus Tour which is new, they use an old Routemaster bus decked out .

Brick Lane - hmmmm - I worked on BL for 2 or 3 years so know it pretty well. If you want to know what a Bangladeshi slum would look like after being given a nightly makeover by a squadron of lager louts then this might be the place for you to visit. This part of London is very interesting with loads of history...wave after wave of immigrants settled here over the centuries....

If you did want to see it try and incorporate the Jack The Ripper Walking Tour - that way you will get a lot more out of the area in general. If you do it in the hours of darkness you will almost certainly get various suggestions as to the true identity of JTR from well-intentioned street people - you may even get propositioned by a crack ho'....
If you want a decent curry in this part of London I recommend http://www.cafespice.co.uk/ not on Brick Lane but who cares.....

if Indian/Pakistanis/Bengali food is on the "must do" list then Drummond Street/Tooting/Southall Middlesex, are worth a look, for the best Pakistani restaurant which I still believe is going strong is The Lahore Kebab House just off The Commercial Road

I wanted to send a great big THANKS to everyone above for all of the London advice. My sister and I had a fabulous holiday, mostly sticking to walking around and soaking in the history. The British Museum was fab and thanks to SweetPea for the Barbican tip - we took in a couple of movies and that place is awesome! I'd also like to highly recommend the Roxy Bar & Screen to those of you who live in London - it's on Borough High Street near the George Inn. It's quite unassuming but a great place to chill with a pint or cocktail. The people there are fun to chat with and I just loved the atmosphere.
I'll refer back to this thread for my next trip so that I can take advantage of more suggestions, as the weather did hamper us a bit and with the holiday season a lot of places were closed. I'm really looking forward to going back and it's looking good for a couple of weeks in August (yay!).
