What if there was "new light" that the 144,000 was symbolic?

I really think that if the Watchtower had an article

that had the new light that the 144,000 was a symbolic

number that the majority of JW's would accept this

hook line and sinker and just be in amazement of

how the light keeps getting brigher and brigher.

I think that the ones on the fence may fall off but

that is about it. These fools (myself included) thought

that the end was coming in 1975 and 35 years later it

    is just around the corner.

Yep, I expect just such an article sometime in the next decade, as the number of "anointed" ones continues to rise.

They would introduce the concept slowly gradually using phrases like, "the body of spirit annointed christians" instead of using the number 144,000. This term "body" would be used in memeorial talks and other key talks / study articles over period of time before the "new light" was revealed. This way there would be less of a shock.

I think it would be akin to the 'generation' teaching change. That shook out quite a few people. For many it was a big enough change to get them to do other researching, thus eventually leading them on the way out. Yet the vast majority just accepted it without thinking.

I hope they do change it. Every person that may have some deep seeded doubts needs a push from a different direction. While the 'generation' change may not have affected one person, it caused another person to realize that something wasn't right.

The same way with changing the number from literal to symbolic. Some will wake up long enough to say, "huh?" and then go back to sleep while others will come out of their chair questioning how such a change could take place.

    UC - "generation?"

Changes do affect people, like the generation thingy. My brother-in-law didn't leave, but encouraged his children to college after the change. They all went, then all left the WTS Inc.

I do not think it would be huge shock to most Dubs, they probably find it harder to accept the present teaching that it is a literal number, when the subsequent phrases are taken as symbolic.

It would have the advantage too, of stretching out the time of the end as long as they wanted, have they not really laid the groundwork for this ?

I reckon one year or so should see this Noo Lite arrive.

Just remember , you read it on JWN first !

I agree, most don't study the lessons, are sleeping during the WT Study, and will take little notice of that change because it won't effect them. Few have a deep understanding of the doctrine and to many, it will only mean a refinement of somehing they don't even care about.

You know what is really sad is that we on JWN know more about

the JW teachings and what is going on, than those who go to

every meeting. Maybe we are the future "new light" source.

I agree with UC for the most part. It will cause some to begin questioning and researching--just like the generation change in 1995.

But overall, it won't be that big of a deal to most JWs. As 'V' once said (I miss that guy, by the way): "JWs don't believe in anything." In other words, doctrines are secondary. With the exception of (1) hell, (2) trinity, (3) immortal soul, and (4) paradise earth, the WTS could change its teachings any way it chooses and 99% of JWs will go right along with it.
