I like to open one of those little Splenda packets and sprinkle it into a small pile on my desk so I can dip my finger in it and enjoy the sweetness.
Mmmmm... I think I'll go get one now!

its carcinogenic. nuff said.
Else, Dip your finger in the Splenda. What a waste! The only way to truly enjoy it is to rub a little on your gums and then snort the rest. ... nnjjikkktsplzzz!!!
I believe there is emerging evidence that artificial sweeteners raise your glycemic index, which causes diabetes and heart disease (with or without weight gain), but I'm too lazy to look it up right now. I am doing some work for the government and they are telling us to recommend not replacing sugar-sweetened beverages with artificially-sweetened drinks, due to the emerging evidence.
Stevia, I agree, is not great alone but if you use it to replace maybe a third of the sugar in baked goods, it's usually not noticeable. (Hard to get the recipe right though.)
There are other options. Licorice can be used as a sweetener and is ok in small amounts. Fructose. Agave.
I am working on reducing sugar intake and trying to retool my taste buds to not want it so much. They're adjusting.
JD asked:
What makes you think it was aspartame?
My GP did.
Stevia may be a carcinogen, may reduce sperm count, and other things - http://safety.lovetoknow.com/Dangers_of_Stevia. It's banned in parts of the world - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stevia. I'm not going to live my life by the Interwebz, but you can find whatever you want.
Aspartame is amino acids. They're in your body already. Like water. Like acid. Like a lot of things. Few concerns unless you have phenylketonuria, in which case you're watching what you eat well beyond sweeteners. It is "one of the most thoroughly tested and studied food additives the agency [FDA] has ever approved."
Don't inundate yourself with it. Like someone else said, too much water can kill you.
And, of course, always pay attention to what your own body is telling you. It's not a one-size-fits-all world.
On a lighter note, I eventually realized that most skinny people don't drink diet sodas.
Also, you never see healthy people in hospitals.
Beware: there is also a camp of people who evangelize the dangers of high fructose corn syrup. So if you go back to just 'regular' pop you aren't in the clear. Unless you find that rare soda that is actually made with real sugar.
Aspartame was reprted to have made people go blind who were sensitive to it. It has also been shown to inhibit the growth of brain cells in the very young.
You take it or leave it.
However only very FAT people seem to drink diet sodas.
HB
The evidence I'm aware of....and that's not a lot...says the main problem with diet sodas is people drink them by the gallon.
Stevia has been shown to be safe in regular-sized doses. I am hoping it won't be put in diet soda, because people will drink it by the gallon, and sure enough, they'll get a high enough dose to experience consequences.
Hansen's Natural Can Soda - http://www.hansens.com/products/products.php?subcat=1&color=soda - not to advertise them specifically, but there is a non-corn syrup product out there.
Also, for a limited time: Pepsi Throwback, made with cane sugar - http://www.pepsithrowbackhub.com/.
