The only reason the Jehovah's Witnesses have not executed their heretics is simply because they don't have the power to do so. They certainly have the desire. All they need, in practical terms, is some sovereign territory in which they are unmolested by any other State powers and they will carry out whatever they see fit .

It is hypothetical of course, but it wouldn't surprise me at all and the same for a number of other religious denominations.

I personally was told by my Judicial Committee that, to quote exactly, "If you were in Israel you would be stoned".

Sounds like a good reason to visit Israel I didnt realise they were so liberal about drugs.

If you want to fix a contest you must control the judge who names the winner or the referee who calls the penalty.

The purpose of a Governing Body is to make sure who wins in any conflict by controlling the venue.

Imagine a boxing match in which one opponent is required to hold his hands behind his back while the other boxer hits him repeatedly.

This is what the Governing Body of Jehovah's Witnesses, in effect, does to win their religious arguments.

The don't permit the opposing argument to be presented fairly. They present THEIR DOCTORED version of the opposing argument (strawman)

and set about punching it repeatedly.

The Earth Catholic Church went about burning the writings of those whom they found to be heretics and, then, characterized the argument in public Apologia in vile, scurrilous language when "refuting" it.

Have you ever read the debates of early Church Fathers with so-called heretics? How abou the debates of Martin Luther?

Such vile language and outright nastiness is, frankly, almost comical in its intensity.

I have a vision of Daffy Duck having one of his meltdowns when I read these debates.

Jehovah's Witnesses don't have fair confrontations with their opoosers like in the "good old days" anymore. The Internet has premitted way too many damning pieces of self-contradiction public access for it to be safe.

While Christendom has huge successful TV ministries, the Watchtower shuns public access in technology like the plague. Why? They can't afford a mass exposure of their weird fantasy doctrines to be exploded publicly.

Look at how the Catholic Church has been held up to scrutiny and ridicule in the press.

JW's avoid that like the plague.

Villabolo, I think your comparison of the Catholic Church and today's JW's is a bit unfair. To me, JW's are like the Catholics of 500 years ago . Some comparisons are not to be made with Catholics of so early times, however. My mother had to cover her hair during the mass. Old Catholic ladies still cover their heads; it's a tradition they can't let go of. As to shunning, maybe you are aware that the Catholic Church had different levels of excommunication, and one of them was "vitandus" ("one to be avoided"). Catholics were not supposed to greet or talk to a person so excommunicated. Now, imagine what would happen to a person excommunicated that way in Catholic Spain of 300 years ago. Even so, there was a difference (check the Wikipedia):

A vitandus (Latin for "one to be avoided") excommunicate was someone affected by a rare and grave form of excommunication, in which the Church ordered, as a remedial measure, that the faithful were not to associate with him "except in the case of husband and wife, parents, children, servants, subjects", and in general unless there was some reasonable excusing cause.

The Catholic Church also tried its own method for information control. There were many books Catholics were not supposed to read. The Index Librorum Prohibitorum et Expurgatorum, the list of forbidden books, was supposed to exist until 1966.

There are so many similarities. What is important about them is that they are as contrary to human freedom and well-being in one religion as in the other.

I think the comparison with the WTS and the catholics church is unfair. I mean the WTS has not burned people at the stake (yet).

The act of Disfellowshipping is a death sentence no matter how you look at it. Remember, the person being ostracized has spent his religious life believing destruction at Armageddon looms menacingly near for any cut off from the Kingdom Hall "ark of salvation."

The family life of a disfellowshipped outcast is ended emotionally and substantively as well. A wedge is driven that kills the heartfelt bonds otherwise demonstrated by affection, proximity and shared associations.

A repulsive label is attached to the disfellowshipped: APOSTATE. Repugnance and fear fill the hearts and minds of previous "brothers and sisters" who now react to association with the outcast as though the "stench of death" has filled their nostrils.

The law of the land prohibits Jehovah's Witnesses from carrying out a death sentence such as was common when the Roman Catholic Church wielded supreme power. But, the effect of their policies and the arbitrary nature of their intentions are identical when it comes to punishing those who disagree.

So, the difference is commensurable as an effective "death" sentence.

To their eyes your death and publicly state that you are. So the WTS does burn you at the stake.

    Think of it this way.

You have a glass of water in front of you. You are told by the highest possible trustworthy authority it is poison.

    Will you risk drinking it?

The Watchtower takes any member who may be as clear and transparent in motives as a glass of water and by labeling them "poison" causes every member to avoid them as though it meant death.

That's how they burn you at the stake. They label you : Apostate. Spiritual Poison.

I remember that same illustration being used from the platform repeatedly using false religion as the topic - if there's even a drop of poison in a glass of water, would you drink it? Meaning that there can be good in all religions but that one drop of false teaching makes the religion false. Ironic, huh?

You can be certain that your former "Brothers" and "Sisters" view you the way they'd view drinking poison.

And for what fundamental reason is this?

A group of old guys in a building told them to!

They've never met these men but they know you intimately. Yet, they side with the strangers!

These old guys have a label attached to them: Governing Body.

You have a label attached to you: Apostate.

And they claim theirs is not a Mind Control organization!

Control the labels and you control the mind.
