Earnest shared this: Chicago Statement on Biblical Inerrancy "... it is necessary to affirm that only the autographic text of the original documents was inspired.."
Yes, but AUTOGRAPHIC TEXTS DO NOT EXIST. This is like making the affirmation "...it is necessary to affirm that Peter Pan could fly."
"The verdict of this science, however, is that the Hebrew and Greek text appear to be amazingly well preserved..."
Preserving counterfeit money amazingly well doesn't make it legal currency.
Indeed, in view of the frequent repetition in Scripture of the main matters with which it deals and also of the Holy Spirit's constant witness to and through the Word, no serious translation of Holy Scripture will so destroy its meaning as to render it unable to make its reader "wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus"
The frequent reports of Bigfoot and the sincerety of those who witnessed Bigfoot's hulking presence as well as UFO kidnappings and Elvis sightings must mean the number of crackpots sayig something is what tests the veracity of their claims.
"Scripture is inerrant, not in the sense of being absolutely precise by modern standards, but in the sense of making good its claims and achieving that measure of focused truth at which its authors aimed."
A bald assertion pulled out of somebody's rectum as a boiler plate bromide. It boils down to: "We want it to be true; so it is!"
Now matter how many ways the Fundamentalists and Evangelicals try to say it, the fact remains there ARE NO ORIGINAL TEXTS available, no first generation copies and no way to avoid the years of silence between the purported events and the appearance of written versions of those events. There is no way to test any scripture for supposed "inspiration". Oral stories and lists of sayings were woven into a biography and that was all there was to it.
