CIA Expects Terror Attack on US Soil Within Six Months

Top U.S. intelligence officials told Congress on Tuesday that the United States can expect a terror attack within its borders in three to six months. CIA Director Leon Panetta revealed to the Senate Intelligence Committee at an annual assessment of the nation's terror threats that al Qaeda operatives are being sent here to carry out new attacks..

Panetta said that the group is using so-called "clean" recruits who have virtually no trail of terrorist contacts.

The hearing held Tuesday comes amidst growing concerns that future attacksin the US could resemble that of the foiled Christmas Day bomb attempt in Detroit, where Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab tried to detonate a bomb in his underwear. Fortunately, the Nigerian student only managed to set his pants on fire. Panetta said that new terror recruits may be more difficult to spot.

Some of the intelligence came from the Panty Bomber. . .

ABC News has learned some of the intelligence has come from the accused Christmas Day bomber.

The FBI secretly flew the suspect's family members in from Nigeria, reportedly to convince him to cooperate.

It would appear that the mother of the would-be bomber got him singing like a bird to the Feds.

    Lots of details, here:

The family of the failed Christmas Day bomber, Umar Farouq Abdulmuttalab, played a pivotal role in getting their son to start cooperating with federal authorities in sharing information about Al Qaeda, a senior administration official said Tuesday evening.

Abdulmuttalab has been cooperating with authorities and sharing intelligence since last Thursday, another administration official told ABC News.

The family was “instrumental in gaining Mr. Abdulmuttalab’s cooperation," said the senior administration official. The information Abdulmuttalab is sharing has been described by other officials as fresh and actionable.

“It has been very successful," the official said, "as far as gaining his cooperation that will allow us then to follow up on that information." He said the intelligence gained "has been disseminated throughout the intelligence community."

    Into Africa

After days of being briefed on information about the case, two “experienced counterterrorism agents” from the FBI flew to Lagos, Nigeria on January 1, the official said.

Once in Nigeria, the agents met with officials of the US State Department, CIA officers, and others in the "country team."

The agents began a “thorough and comprehensive” background investigation of Abdulmuttalab, contacting his family, friends and associates and conducting thorough background interviews "to gain understanding of the subject.”

The two agents identified those family members who “directly supported gaining Umar Farouq’s cooperation and disagreed with his effort to murder innocent civilians.”

The agents and key family members arrived in back in the US on January 17th. The family members met with officials from the Justice Department and the FBI to plan a way forward.

“One of the principal reasons why his family came back is because they had complete trust in the US system of justice and believed that Umar Farouq would be treated fairly and appropriately," the senior official said. "And that they would be as well.”

The FBI and Abdulmuttalab's family approached the subject and “gained his cooperation. He has been cooperating for days," the official said.

To me....it's been an absolute miracle that there hasn't been anymore attacks on US soil since 9/11.

When I seen some posts about the WTS putting NYC property up for sell and making plans to move to upstate NY, it made me think they were concerned about possible attacks on NYC.

If so, where's their faith in Jehovah? Surely, he would prevent anything from harming his "channel on earth".

I wonder if Obama's presidency has something to do with this?

I would have a hard time trusting anything that comes from the CIA, being that the very nature of this organization is so secretive and not subject to scrutiny and is heavily involved with manipulation of the masses and strategies that are designed not to be informative, but manipulative they are a secret government inside the government.

That may be true, but I think it's important to remember that successes in averting terrorist incidents are largely unreported since it would compromise further operations. So everyone hears about the Agency's falures, but comparatively few hear about the successes.

^ That may be so, I don't give a lot of brain cycles to it - but doesn't it seem that other countries (e.g., Britain) hail at least some of their success in public?
