On behalf of a shy friend from JWN:

A few weeks ago, a message appeared along with a bong sound that said, cmd.exe-Application Error. This appears in left-hand corner of message box. The message read: The application filed to initialize properly (Oxc0000142). Please click to terminate the application.

I clicked but nothing happened and I couldn't do anything further on the computer but actually had to pull the plug to turn it off. When I start the computer everything is fine until after a while the bong sound starts and keeps doing that until the message appears and then stops the computer. When the bong starts, I can continue to work but the system won't save anything and I lose my work which includes emails and when I'm working in "Word."

Trying to solve this problem myself, I Googled "cmd.exe-Application Error." I looked at all the suggestions for a fix and chose to download something that solves a "Registry" problem. That program said I had over 800 registry errors, etc., so I bought the service and cleaned up the computer. I was told to do it weekly which I am. However, I still have the problem, especially when I work on the computer for a few hours or if I leave the computer on. Then the message appears and I have to pull the plug.

I wrote the Register Convoy company and explained that I still have the problem, but no response.

One suggestion on Google to solve the problem is to delete "undocking" profile and restart; then reset the display. I don't have the foggiest idea what that's all about.

If this is a memory problem, I have plenty but even so, I cleaned out any programs I don't use, such as Chrome, etc. I do have Firefox and use it often. The Application Error problem also pops up when I'm in Firefox, so this is not an Explorer problem, as far as I can see.

I can't work for very long in Word without losing what I'm working on, so I can't continue with my writing. The other day, I lost quite a bit of work when the bong sound started and it's very frustrating.

    any input gratefully received.....

    What version of Windows?

Often, a NON-DESTRUCTIVE reinstall of Windows XP will do wonders for mysterious software issues. The non-destructive reinstall option is not clearly obvious on the XP menu, so be sure to follow the instructions, step-by-step to avoid formatting the disc.

This problem has been around on various versions of Windows and WinServer for a long time. Unfortunately, it does not have one single cause.

Second and third rate free security software can cause it. Problems with Windows Media Player can cause it. Browser problems can cause it. Malware can cause it.

If this person is running XP or above, a system restore to a point before the symptoms began often helps with elusive problems.

    besty,

    Try this:

Go into search mode in Windows Explorer for files and folders. Enter "liberal" as the search parameter. When all the files are displayed, Ctrl-A them and press "delete."

That should do the trick and get rid of all of those nasty viruses!

Seriously, I've never seen that problem, but we all know cmd.exe is the operating system kernel. We also all know that Windows often gives bogus information about the source of the problem.

I think going back to a date and restoring is the best choice. It's worked for me in the past. Sometimes I've had to go back several restores before the problem disappeared.

Other than that, a reinstall of the OS might be necessary, unless it is a hardware problem. I haven't tried it with my version of XP, but it should give you the option doing a re-install without a complete hard disk format.

Good luck! I hate it when that crap happens. I have (for the first time in 28 years) a FULLY LICENSED (and paid for) operating system, XP Professional. Since I bought it I haven't had to reformat and blow everything away on my hard drive in 3 years. That is a record for me. Before, it was usually an annual process.
