This wonderful article explores the greeting from many angles.

    A quote I enjoyed:

"At its most general namaste is a social transaction. It is usual for individuals to greet when they meet each other. It is not only a sign of recognition but also an expression of happiness at each other's sight. This initial conviviality sets the positive tone for the further development of a harmonious relationship. Namaste as a greeting thus is a mosaic of movements and words constituting an intimation of affirmative thoughts and sentiments. In human society it is an approach mechanism, brimming with social, emotional and spiritual significance. In fact it is said that in namaste the hands are put together like a knife so that people may cut through all differences that may exist, and immediately get to the shared ground that is common to all peoples of all cultures."

    Namaste all.

I love that! I'm wanting a tatoo this summer and I'm looking for ancient symbols that mean something "enlightened" so if you run across one let me know. Namaste........wf

Whereabouts are you having the tattoo on your body ?

Sometimes it is difficult to read a word, and if they misread it as "Manaste" they may get the wrong idea, perhaps just an image is best, no words !

I'm not sure yet where to get it, but I do know I want a symbol, no words. But I've never had a tattoo and I want it to be perfect. A symbol that has a lot of meaning to me. I've been googling ancient symbols and their meanings. When I see the right one I'll know it. Buddha Eyes was a really cool symbol, but it seemed religious and I don't want something religious, something that embraces all........wf

    Perhaps a yin-yang? With a dragon maybe?

    Namaste Jeff,

What a lovely quote. I had some indian lads who used to say that to me when they boarded my bus. I thought it was just a general greeting, but I now know it conveys so much more, and I am more the happier for it.

That's kind of cool AKJeff. I wonder, can you make the yin-yang with ANY design or is the dragon one specific for something?.......wf

I lived in India for a year or so. I would say Namesta to people at the same time bringing my hands together in a prayer like position.

I never heard anyone in the congregation say it wasn't appropriate - it's a standard form of greeting in India.
