LIFE AFTER JW: Have you gotten psychotherapy yet? Why do we need it?

We all regardless of our spiritual beliefs have in common a past damaged by brain washing and mind control. There is no doubt that our mental health has been affected to different degrees. But we usually go and continue our life trying to patch the injuries on our own.

One of the reasons we find it so difficult to deal with the world is precisely that. Our distortion of the reality and our inability to deal with a world unknown to us.

So how many of you have search for mental help? How many of you are under psychotherapy? How do you feel after it? Who doesnt think to need it? and why? Where is a good place to get help at an affordable cost?

I went for it, and lasted about ten sessions. I saw a counsellor and a psychyatrist (sp?). That's all that I needed, and it helped a great deal.

I highly recommend it to each and every person who leaves this group. It's nice to get support here, but let's be honest, this is a far cry from professional help and advice is only just that; advice. I'm pretty far from a psychologist, that's for sure.

I have not received any therapy and I don't think it is necessary for everyone who leaves. Time and life have taken care of a lot of the negative emotions I felt after leaving.

Therapy is a good way, I think, to progress faster, but it is expensive. Even with insurance, they usually only pay 50%. It is a shame that mental health is not cared for in the same manner as physical health, but it just isn't.

CHOOSING: Can we survive without it- YES. Do we need it - YES. Do we all think we need it - No. But just because we think we dont need it doesnt make it unnecessary right?

As much as I support it as a useful practice, I see psychotherapy as still being more of an art than a science. In other words, you can't take a "recipe" for psychotherapy, hand it to anyone good at following directions, and produce a successful therapist. It's frighteningly easy to find therapists who ... to put in plainly ... suck. A large percentage of them are neurotic robots trying desperately to find an answer to their own problems by pondering those of others. I don't know if there is any more efficient way to find a "good one" than just trying one after another; if there is, I'd certainly like to know the method.

That said, when the therapist is intelligent, empathetic, open-minded, intellectually curious, and knowledgeable, it can be a great service to those who can't find the way out of the little box they've built around themselves.

I would highly recommend it. Just be prepared to teach the therapist about life in the JW cult. Many have little or no experience with this.

    It saved my life.

One of my counselors told me she had never had a client who had such a low sense of self worth.

Many that leave are put on a guilt trip..I would recommend counseling for those.

Ones that are raised in the religion and leave..I would recommend counseling for them..

Anyone that finds themselves with a lot of unexplained anger or easily provoked hostility...I would recommend counseling..

Anyone that suffered any kind of abuse, mental or physical..I would recommend counseling..

If you get caught up in their circular reasoning and find yourself wanting to pull your hair out..I would recommend counseling..

    Snoozy...

You will have that Gestalt moment and then you'll feel better.
