I remember several brothers who did this and sometimes when they went out of town our family would do their route. They would bid on public parks to clean and as you might guess the job involved picking up the trash and cleaning the bathrooms. The pickup would get pretty smelly from all the trash bags in the bed and the day would end at the dump. All preparation for the New System, I suppose.
Did you ever clean parks as a JW?

I never even heard of this. Was a large portion of the trash from the "tracts" that JW's handed out?

where i live, the local government has a parks department and takes care of all of that. i will say that one day, they had a clean up day at a local park and a bunch of jw's who played volleyball on one of the sand courts every weekend went and helped clean up.

Does lawn duty at the KH count?

I know that some jws contracted out to clean the rest stops along the interstate system. It's a job and if it pays well and the hours are flexible, I can see them doing that. In this area, contractors tend to be paid more for jobs done by civil servants.

For sure I cannot imagine the WTS suggesting (or even permitting) this to be done as an unpaid public service. Much better to be going door to door.
I too had never heard of anything like it.

No, it wasn't unpaid. Like I said, the jobs were bid on.

Not sure what was the question about. If it's a paid job, JWs are perfect for it, they should have the necesarry skill. It's just a job like any other.
Now, if it was a free service to the community, it's a commendable thing. I used to do that a few times in my pre-JW era, but then the WTS looked down on that sort of thing, so I stopped, and started pioneering instead. You have one guess as to what was more beneficial to the community

There is nothing wrong or improper for a jw to take a job cleaning parks. If a group of jws use a park, then they normally clean up after themselves and even more. Otherwise, the door to door witnessing is always priority over any unpaid secular activities.

Shit, I'm starting to think it was just a local phenomenon. Guess it didn't catch on like buffing floors.
