My wife wants me to get a nice family bible for us.

I have interlinears and study bibles but she wants a "simple one", LOL !

I know which types she WANTS - harcover, with a lacth, beautiful old drawings, the kind that I h ave to sell a kidney to get !

I think that I would like a nice hardcover, leather one, I don't know the difference between genuine and bonded leather.

I would like some nice illustrations, I always find those old time black and white drawings in some older bible so beautiful.

I think a NIV verison is good for the whole family ( easy to read and understand) and those with a thumb index would be great too !

    Any suggestions?

That's a good laundry list, but I'm not sure any publisher could hit all points today.

The first thing that comes to mind is my mother's 1960's Jerusalem Bible, beautifully printed and bound with embossed covers. Also for the thumb indexes (indices?). This is the edition I grew up with beside our greenback NWTs. Always LOVED it, the bridge between us being outlaw JW's and our family history as Roman Catholics.

The illustrations you describe are typically engravings from the artist Gustave Doré, that alone should aid your search.

Better than any Bible to be displayed is the complete works of Calvin and Hobbies bound in 3 attractive bound volumes. Lay them on the coffee table and more people will be amused, inspired and impressed than by any religious book out there.

When you say family bible, do you mean a version with all the Nudity, Violence, Sex and Spiritism removed?

    Hello PS,

Check out the ESV Study Bible.

The more I use it, the more I like it. The study notes are awesome as are the cross references.

It is not quite as immediate to comprehend as the NIV but what you might loose you gain in accuracy in the translation.

This could be quite a bonus if you are using a bible to compare with the NWT.

The NIV is quite loose by comparison, I have been comparing the ESV with the NIV for some time now.

You can get the text and audio here English Standard Version just no study notes. However, the cross refs are all intact :)

    Blessings,

    Stephen

I have the ESV Study Bible, but a study bible is a bit too much for a 7 year old like my Eldest and my wife doesn't like "all the notes", LOL !
