I know when I am close to a Toyota now, when I am driving, I get a little squeamish.
Would You Buy A Toyota?

I sure a hell would buy a Toyota. Remember the Audi unintended acceleration in the 1980's? Audi sales suffered from many years. I all turned out to be driver error, many manufacturers did recalls to install a lock out to keep the driver error from shifting from park to reverse without pushing the brake.

They wouldn't be my first choice right now. Although my last 3 cars have been Toyota's and they are great.

The throttle issue is not the big deal. I would have no problem with just this, since you can simply take it to the dealer to install new software that has the safety feature that kills the engine power if you stomp on the brakes. You can also put the car in Neutral or "2", or turn it off, if you suddenly speed up beyond a reasonable and prudent speed because of a faulty throttle. It will probably blow the engine, but a blown engine is cheaper than a totaled car, hospital bills, and damage and injury to others.
However, I am more worried about their move toward using crap components. Once upon a time, Toyota used good components in their cars. They were among the best in the industry--Lexus was one of the most reliable brands, and the Camry used to be among the highest quality cars that were affordable. But, they have trended toward using crap components to save money. If you use crap components, you get crap cars. They are now more likely to conk out and to run like crap. In due time, crap parts wear out quicker than good ones. This means you are more likely to see other problems (like busted transmissions, engine failure, body and electrical problems, drivetrain issues, and the like) happening on cars that used to excel in these areas.
Until Toyota goes back to using good parts and disregarding trying to save money by using crap ones, I will not recommend buying them. From what I have seen, Honda also makes good cars--when they start using crap parts also, it's time to start a new car company that uses good parts or makes its own good parts. They might cost a little more, but they will be worth it when you are not left stranded on I10 with cars speeding by you at 85 MPH or out in the middle of a desert with a busted car.

Ok, maybe Toyota has a ghost in the machine that causes the car to accelerate on its own and can't be controlled...
How often does it happen? Or more importantly - how often does it happen compared to how often you have to deal with idiots behind the wheel, no matter what make of car?
Point being...I'm more worried about dumbasses behind the wheels of cars around me more than I'm worried about the odd possessed Prius trying to push me outa the way...

No, I'm a Ford truck kind of guy. I bought my first one in 1997 after my Toyota crapped out.
