Is religion a form of abuse? Does superstition imprison the mind and keep us from living a rich, fulfilling life?

The parallels are stunning, especially in regard to original sin doctrines - and the idea that we somehow "deserve" our alleged plight.

Religion is control. Control is abuse. Few exceptions: Family drug abuse, ocd, credit card debt (and others). Shunning is attempting to control. To return to the abuse.

I've heard the comparison of God as the husband and us humans as his battered wife referenced before, but with all the parallels written down like that it's quite amazing all the similarities.

And even when that battered woman does leave her abusive husband, it takes a while for her to heal mentally from the abuse.
And people wonder why those of us who left a controlling cult have such issues with it and can't always just let it go...

That is one of the best videos I have ever seen on free-thinking, thank you for posting it.
I honestly believe that the adoration believers feel for god is a form of Stockholm Syndrome. How can you genuinely freely love somebody for saving you from eternal punishment at the hands of the person doing the saving? It is the very definition of an abusive relationship.
nasticanasta, the question is not whether life on earth is heavenly but whether that should be our common goal. Talk of rewards and punishments in an imaginary afterlife are a cop out from our responsibility to make this world what it could be

> the definition of heaven does not support the idea of a short lived life then death
The point of the comment is that we should strive to make life better while we are living and not simply endure suffering in hope for a better afterlife.
Fix the bad thing now instead hoping for paradise in an afterlife.

Religion attacks the cognitive mind and replaces your map of the real world with substitutes which are actually Anti-Concepts.
Anti-concepts nullify actual concepts. They erase what you really know and replace it with what cannot be known.
Your vocabulary is detached from the real world and substitute definitions take their place.
Example: THE TRUTH stops meaning "that which corresponds to the world as it is." Instead THE TRUTH becomes "what you read in the Watchtower."
The ultimate goal of religion is to disable your actual ability to perceive and operate in the real world because you cannot acknowledge what you cannot describe! This is induced blindness.
Religion is a virus that hijacks all your connective links. You click on the file label: REAL this or REAL that and it takes you to the Anti-conceptual definition and description.
A JW will look at his neighbor and see a "goat who will die at Armageddon."
A Hindu will look at a cow and see a sacred being whose urine can cure diseases!
Religion destroys your perceptions and your knowledge. You become a disabled tool (an actual slave) of some other GUIDING ENTITY; usually this is a leader of some sort with an agenda.
Is religion a form of abuse? No. It is not a "form" of abuse. It is ABUSE itself.
Everybody is entitled to reality.
Religion is the opposite of reality.
Religion is theft, fraud and insanity presented as Hope, goodness and life everlasting.

Religion is anti-freedom
Christianity is not a religion, it is anti-religion. Jesus hates religion and organized religion to be more specific. See how Jesus calls the Pharasees "Broods of Vipers! Blind Guides!" Because they practice relgion as opposed to "relationship" Religion is about man for man, it's never has been for God.
Religion is about fear and control.
Christianity is about freedom from control, both mind and body.
Jesus wanted to bring back "relationship" between man and God.
The Pharasees wanted control, so they brought "religion" to man and put them in shackles of fear "do this or my god will destroy you"
