Two years ago, this repost for the benefit of newbies, is a reflection in light of Candace Conti's recent court success.

    This line:

"It is that capacity to place yourself above the law and to make those who have been wronged feel "quite apologetic" that is peculiar to the church"

explains the now infamous Question 9 from this thread:

We know that all kinds of organisations – from banks to political movements – can generate a culture

of perverted loyalty in which otherwise decent people will collude in crimes "for the greater good".

I was just thinking of this the other day. The Catholic church, Penn State, and Jehovah's Witnesses all think that they are benefiting hundreds, thousands, or millions of people.

Of course the guilty parties are fearful of being exposed and being convicted, going to jail or paying large fines.

But even among those who would never dream of harming anyone themselves, there is a mindset that if the "sins" of a few are not covered up, the institution will crumble, and all the "good" that they do will be swept away. They justify, somehow, to themselves that it is better for a "handful" of children to have suffered than for all of their "good works" to be destroyed.

Now where have I seen that attitude before? Oh, yeah, here:

    John 11:45-50 (NWT):

45 Therefore many of the Jews that had come to Mary and that beheld what he did put faith in him; 46 but some of them went off to the Pharisees and told them the things Jesus did. 47 Consequently the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered the San´he·drin together and began to say: “What are we to do, because this man performs many signs? 48 If we let him alone this way, they will all put faith in him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation.” 49 But a certain one of them, Ca´ia·phas, who was high priest that year, said to them: “Y OU do not know anything at all, 50 and YOU do not reason out that it is to YOUR benefit for one man to die in behalf of the people and not for the whole nation to be destroyed.”
