Saturday's daily text: Jonah 3:10 " --God felt regret--that he had spoken--" So Jonah must have had a premonition, that he would be made to look like a fool because of his preaching, that is probably the real reason why he went to Spain, tasted the fishy gastric juices for 3.5 days. Because the all knowing god could not be bothered to foresee that the Ninevites would change their attitude, --- Bible nonsense. "God is adaptable" . so: JWs still "in" beware, with every new light you are being made to look like fools, because the GB, FDS is adaptable. -

So the big fish received a Divine appointment.
Jonah 1:17 God appoint a great fish to swallow up Jonah.
So the big fish wasn't just minding his own business and along
came Jonah. No, God in some way appointed this fish to find Jonah
and swallow him, not as a meal but as punishment.
Make sense to me..

title correction: " Did Jonah know more? It does not help the Jesus story's credibility that he is said to have endorsed this appointment tales. -

When any prophet proclaimed a message of coming judgement there was always an option of repentance . Jonah new that and knew that if the Ninevites repented they would be spared .
The story is more to do with the attitude of the Jews towards Gentiles .The Jews were supposed to be evangalising the "nations " but instead had adopted a holier than thou attitude to their neighbours .
Jonah isn't pleased that the Ninevites are spared , he wants them annihilated ! .If he was a real person or not the story is a lesson to the Jews that Yahweh is just as concerned with saving non Jews as He is with looking after them .
I despair at JW teaching , so often it misses the point (on purpose I suspect ) to push its own propaganda .

jhine, are you saying that a false prophecy would be used to threaten a population with the certainty of action, but then the messenger was in danger of being exposed as false prophet Det. 18 , -- with consequences? In Jonah 3:4 even a precise date is given: "40 days" until the end, soon, just around the corner. This from the prophet, apparently from the direct instructions from god. No call to repentance in that message. ?
Is anybody else vexed by that daily text?

No Prologos , not a false prophecy . What I am saying is that any prophecy of judgement always came with a get out clause attached. Jonah would know that . This is why he said " I knew you would let them off " The point of the story seems that Jonah did not want to warn the Ninevites in the first place because he did not want them to have the chance to repent !

yhwh also appointed a worm at one point. That scripture always made me laugh. Perhaps a worm and a whale will be sitting in judgement up there with the 144000.

I think that I have successfully managed to put a link to a Jewish commentary about Jonah . If you can open it ! you will see that Rabbis and Jewish commentators also find the book of Jonah amusing . There is however some in depth thoughts and ideas on the book . Very different I suspect from WT type teaching .
I have never managed to do a link before , I am a real learner on a computer so if this works you guys are witnesses, pardon the pun , to something special .
