Using funerals to recruit members

I heard a somewhat amusing story from a co-worker over lunch. He said he was at a funeral for a JW relative, and they had a registry for guests to sign. His wife signed the registry, and included their home address. You can guess the rest. A couple of days later, a JW from the funeral showed up at their home with some literature, and offering a "hope" for the future.

The co-worker found it both strange and amusing. I just chuckled and said, "That sounds about right." I guess the moral of the story is never let JWs know where you live.

That's a return visit, keyser. It makes your boasting slip all that more interesting at the end of the month.

I guess that's not quite as rude as the Westboro Baptists who picket funerals with "God hates Fags" signs...even if the deceased is not a homosexual, but almost.

YORK, Pa. – Some nights Albert Snyder wakes up at 3 a.m. Other nights he doesn't sleep at all, tormented by thoughts of the hateful signs carried by a fundamentalist church outside his Marine son's funeral.

"Thank God for Dead Soldiers ."

    "You're Going to Hell."

    "Semper Fi Fags."

Hundreds of grieving families have been targeted by the Westboro Baptist Church , which believes military deaths are the work of a wrathful God who punishes the United States for tolerating homosexuality.

Most mourners try to ignore the taunts. But Snyder couldn't let it go. He became the first to sue the church to halt the demonstrations, and he's pursued the group farther than anyone else.

But, Snyder's son was not gay.

Well, at least we know there are still people a little nuttier than the JWs. *sigh*

LOL! Funny and yet, sad at the same time. Although this is the 1st I have heard of JW's using a funeral registry for recruitment purposes, I am not surprised. They normally inplement the sales pitch towards the end of the eulogy.

That is unreal! Who does that?

I thought you were going to talk about trying to recruit people while at the funeral. I am slightly ashamed to admit having gone to worldly funerals, usually for my patients, where I have shared scriptures with the family and a "when a loved one dies" brochure or 2. I may have also left some magazines in the ladies room in the funeral home. I really did want to be comforting and share the hope of a resurrection. I hope the people can forgive me if they found it offensive.

Mindmelda, that Fred Phelps guy of the Westboro church is a disgusting person. I do not know how he can justify what he does,

The sermon at a JW funeral is usually a sales pitch for the Watchtower. I once went to funeral where half the family was Mormon and the other half JW. The person that died was neither. It was like dualing cults. Both sides used the funeral to pitch their cults.

Westboro Baptists are a cult, and Fred Phelps is their Baal, Lord of the Shitpile. LOL

That's all I have to say about those maniacs. Well there's this guy, who knows how to milk a joke.

Being a fader with an Elder father I have make several close non-jw relatives swear on a stack of bibles not to let my father give me a JW funeral. I had a agnostic almost atheist relative pass a while back. The relative asked for an informal gathering so we got together at the house and remembered our relative. Here comes Pop with the tie and jacket and the NWT in hand to read some scriptures. Talk about uncomfortable.... I realized if I didn't do something I'd get a JW funeral if anything ever happened. Pop meant well but ya know... I would have for my friends and family to have to sit through a whole JW funeral. They are the worse...
