Howard felt unconditionally loved. The light was the King of Kings, Lord of Lords, Christ Jesus the Savior. He had substance and was indescribably wonderful: goodness, power, knowledge, and love. He held me and caressed me like a mother with her baby. Next, they both rose upward, gradually at first, and then like a rocket - out of that detestable hell.
When there is a sudden change from third person to first person…. It makes you go “hmmm” about the story…
Here is the deathbed declaration of a famous Indian skeptic & atheist:

Declaration of attitude and temperament
I, B. Premanand s/o late Sri Basava Prabhu, 80 years of age resident Chettipalayam Road, Podanur, sound of mind though suffering from physical complications caused by metastases in many organs caused by carcinoma of the stomach herein solemnly wish to place on record the following:
I have been closely associated with the rationalist movement from 1975 onwards and have been a rationalist of full conviction since then and continue to be so.
It is common for the purveyors of superstitions and such anti rational forces to start spreading rumors about rationalists turning to god and other supernatural forces at the end of their lives and becoming devotees of gods and god men of various types.
It is also claimed that at times of crises that we staunch rationalists through the major part of our lives, turn to spiritualism and religion.
I wish to clarify that as on today the twentieth of September, 2009 I remain a staunch rationalist and wish to place on record the following:
I wish I could show him this thread, but alas.

Let's face the facts here. People believe in the bible, because the bible told them so.
That, for me, isn't leading a happy life.
Since I've left the disgusting cult, my life has taken turns for the best and I am so happy.

Whoever put all of this together doesn't seem to be all that concerned what people believe because confusion about the issue has been going on for so long that it seems that if it was that important a clear and straightforward answer would be blazing like a billboard for everyone to see.
Who do they think they are kidding? In fact, religious people (and especially those whose religions are quite strict) find their happiness compromised.
There are many examples of this. First, take your typical monk. These are asked to be celibate, and everything they do is what someone else tells them to do. You cannot find true happiness like that. Missionaries have it little easier--while celibacy is usually not required of missionaries, spending countless hours thumping the Bible or whatever holy writings they have in foreign lands is--while they could have been busy living a more enjoyable life.
The Jehovah's Witlesses have so many rules that being happy as one is nearly impossible. You can only be happy there if you enjoy being told everything to do, learning confusing doctrines that often change with time, and love going to the same doors with the same message only to have most of them not responsive or not home. Most witlesses are miserable doing this.
On the other hand, there are no binding rules on atheists. Those who do not believe in God have no "higher cause" to answer to, aside what is good for themselves and/or society. Agnostics are weakly bound to a God--they might do things "in case there is a God", but they are not going to sacrifice whole blocks of their lives to a God that may or may not exist. True Satanists also do not sacrifice to Jehovah--they believe that God is wicked and will not obey anything He tells them to just because He tells them. None of these are going to get involved in missionary work or a bunch of rules that take all the fun out of living.
very sad thinking
I think it's the other way around. The zombie Dubs spend their whole lives waiting for something to happen, and when their time is up they regret the life they have wasted.
When there is a sudden change from third person to first person…. It makes you go “hmmm” about the story…
I think the fact that the story was about the thoughts of someone who was dieing made me go hmmm long before the author let their fervency go so completely overboard that they forgot they were supposed to be narrating in the third person.
