I hated answering up! Hated it with a passion! I would spend the whole study working out my answer, getting it world perfect in my head, as i put my hand up i would be shaking, and afterwards shaking too.

Then there would always be sister perfect elderette who would answer up without turning a hair and give a sermon of her own, usualy using the point i had just made as if i hadn't made it in the right way and therefore it was up to her to correct it.

Strangly enough, i loved "answering up" in the classroom, never had any trouble...

A joy or Pain? what was your experiance?

Many of the answers were basically parotted from the study article anyway.

I always did it... I liked to and it kept my mind on what was going on . Was I nervous? no. Perhaps naively I felt that "my brothers" were not out to be critical ..

And when I was conducting an Item I learned how much the conductor depends on answers so I tried to contribute something..Hmm , perhaps I should give myself a ...

Today in the family I hear nothing but grumbles that the WT conductor does not want more than a basic answer and positively glares if they say anything interesting that is not in his line of reasoning. I tell them that it is WT policy to stick to the para and say it in no more than 30 seconds..

The more intelligent answerer's often have their hands ignored

I quit answering in the 80's when they began insisting that we answer strictly from the paragraph.

I remember one night at book study, I was called on and got about 6 words out when the conductor cut me off and asked me to only comment from the paragraph. I think that was the last time i commented. ( btw I was not a long winded answerer, I kept things short and concise)

I refused to parrot info that was just read out load, it was just to insulting to my intelligence.

A pain. I hated it and dreaded each wt study. My mother would shoot me the evil eye when I wouldn't raise my hand and was disgusted if a study passed without my making an attempt to answer.

    So glad I'm out.

I didn't mind it but our cong were dreadful answerer's truly awful always long periods without a hand in sight, it was if they were on strike, depending on my mood I would go through long spells without answering on purpose, then all of a sudden my hand became invisible!

Like a Sphere, there simply was no challenge or interest when I realized all that was expected or allowed was parrotting the paragraph. But it struck me a little earlier (in the late 60's).
