  May is Mental Health Month; community mental health to remove stigma

  Monday, May 03 – The Community Mental Health Centre continues its tradition of celebrating “May is Mental Health Month” in the BVI under the theme, ‘Healthy Relationships Build a Healthy Community’.

  The month kicked off with a meeting on Sunday, 3rd May, 2010 at the Jehovah Witnesses Kingdom Hall in Huntum’s Ghut where Community Mental Health staff were welcomed and given the opportunity to disseminate vital information on the importance of Mental Health.

  “We selected the Kingdom Hall this year as their Awake magazine has often focused on Mental Health and assisted in bringing awareness on the importance of it…we are excited to join the witnesses to continue building awareness,” Dr. Virginia Rubaine, Head of the Community Mental Health Department said after the meeting.

  Funny, we tried to use our KH for a similar program in 1996 and the WTS flatly rejected our letter asking for permission. To the point that the CO was notified and admonished us Elders during his visit 'the KH is not to be used for such things'.

  We discussed this further saying this could really open doors to witnessing in this very closed up territory. (it was on an Indian Reservation) Plus help fullfill a charter with the tribe who leased us the land for the KH with a conditional use permit, 'to support the community'.

  Our 2nd letter was sent and answered saying, 'see our first letter'. The new questions were not answered at all. We all literally shook our heads wondering about the WTS reasoning. Then having to explain to the local govenmental authorities as to why the KH couldn't be used. Our laison to the tribe, a Indian MS, had no idea how to explain it without the JW's looking bad to the community.

  The WTS blew a great opportunity to open up the witnessing work more to a tough territory that mistrusted incoming religions.

  And to add: And caused discouragement to some of the local Indians who were genuinely excited by this opportunity.

  Why change the meeting place for people with mental health issues..

  Wonder if it's a trial program for the WTS. They could increase their revenue stream if they rented out Kingdom Halls on Saturday afternoons or other times when congregation meetings aren't typically held. And trying it out in the BVI makes it obscure enough that few JWs would hear about it and be "stumbled".

  Or, on the other hand, it could be a bunch of elders who are about to get their @$$ handed to them by the CO and/or branch when they get wind of it.

  Thanks for posting that article. I forwarded it to a JW friend & some of my JW relatives.

  I can't help but suspect someone did not get permission. Unless this is the old double standard (Mexico / Malawi) and they are letting BVI try it. Maybe it will make them seem more main stream and acceptable to the masses.
