I'm not sure how much the Society is actually pushing the "end is so close we can taste it" mentality or if it's just a groundswell from the rank and file themselves.

The 75 fiasco was brought upon by the WTS by all the hype from 68 thru 74...through the publications and talks. The old "generation" teacing was their own undoing as well but currently the WTS is trying hard to figure out how to extend "the last generation" to last longer than what they preached for years and years.

Yea, sure they constanly harp on "the end is near" but that's nothing new....they've done that for a hundred years. I'm not sure that the WTS is amping up the rhetoric on how close it is or if it's just the dubs reading into things on their own...and the WTS lets them.

We are going through a rough patch right now. A bad recession, two wars, now a catastrophic oil spill... and while earthquakes and other disasters haven't really increased, the instant knowledge and continuous coverage has. So when a minor earthquake happens half way around the world, we hear about it the next time we check our CNN app on our iphone, it makes more of an impression.

So people who have been led to believe for years and decades that the end is near and they experience more troubling times personally and through the media, they build it up in their minds more. Put a hundred like minded people together and they bolster each other's fears. Put a couple thousand togther for a weekend and let a WT speaker repeat the same old tripe about "the end" and the continue to build it up even more.

That's not to absolve the WTS of any blame at all. It is them afterall, who for a hundred years has built up this "end" coming any moment...it's just that when times are bad, people tend to build shit up in their minds worse than it is...which works out for the WTS and their prophecy business.

No, no. According to the CO a couple of years back, he said that when he was with the DO for one of those double visits, he heard the DO relate how the GB as a body believe we are so close to the end (he had been to a recent DO/Other Big Wig meeting and this was conveyed to them there). The CO went on about how individual GB members have said this kind of thing before, but this is the first time as a body they have made this statement although it's not in print [ha, they're not totally crazy, I thought], but do you need it to be in print? [hell yes! I thought], don't you know/feel it? and look at how the preaching work is speeding up [mentions all the recent special leaflet and mag campaigns that proved it] and don't put off the system's end in your mind thinking it's years away, the end won't come and find Jehovah's org is fizzling out, no, the preaching work is reaching its crescendo and it'll come while Jehovah's org is busy.

And at last year's DA the closeness of the end was emphasized again (so I heard from one of my relatives who seemed to be buying into it again, despite the fact that he had not long previously been seriously questioning the worn out 'end is soon' mantra, and beginning to see Matt 24 in a whole new light ... long story *sigh*).

I think it's all about 2014 getting dangerously close and too many realizing the game's up. Get the sheeples excited that big things are going to be happening before Jesus' coronation centenary.

I was 19 years old in 1966 and walking down the street on the way to my friend's house when a truck circled around and came up behind me.

The driver leaned on the horn a few times to startle me.

It was one of the older brothers from the congregation who had spotted me!

"Get in." he said.

It wasn't a request.

I complied without thinking much of it. I assumed he wanted to give me a lift to my destination.

No sooner had I slammed the truck door than he offered his gigantic meaty paw for me to shake.

"Brother Walstrom, have you made out your schedule for the month yet?"

The question was a bit of left-field. I tried to adjust my mind the way you adjust your eyes to the light when coming in from outside.

"My......schedule?"

"Didn't you read the Watchtower article? All of us need to schedule our time carefully."

My brain raced ahead. What the F*** was he going on about? Where was he driving me?

"I haven't gotten around to it...um..yet."

"Do you you know the first thing that goes on your schedule?"

I hesitated. He turned down the corners of his mouth.

"I guess not. The FIRST thing on your schedule is your worship, field service, meeting attendance, study time and so on..."

"Okay."

"Time is so short right now we can't waste a minute of it."

"Okay."

"Not one minute."

"Right."

He pulled the truck off to the side of the road and waited.

I sat there for a second and realized that was my cue to get out. I did.

"The Time is Now." He wheeled the truck around and hauled ass off in a dusty cloud of debris and dead leaves.

It took me a minute to figure out where the hell I was standing.

He had dropped me off about a quarter of a mile in the wrong direction from where I was headed.

The idiot.

That was 1966. Today, my calendar tells me the year is 2010.

Did he really say he missed the fun of 75? I was there and know the damage it did to many people who sold homes, quit jobs and or moved to places that they took menial work to survive until that date. I know of several people who quit working for GM and moved to North Michigan and had just enough money to live to 75. Many of these people did not have kids, or go on tirps or save any money bla bla bla. It fuc%ed them up big time. Its not a game and its not funny, no more than Jim Jones Kool Aid is a joke. Peoples lives are at stake and they are basing it on crap that is as fake a big foot, in fact as little evidience as there is for bigfoot thats more than the evidence for Jesus or any of the fantastic stories of the bible.
