we once had this elder who was called in for jury duty back in the early 80's.

During the stage where they pick out the jury members and ask if you have any problem serving, (remember that this is in a crowded courtroom)

he talked about how he, as one of JW's he could not judge somebody because of bible principals.

(In private he thought it was a form of persecution).

The local newspaper had a reporter there, and he took pictures and wrote an article about this guy and his bible based thinking.

We all thought what a wonderful witness this was at the time.

Interesting how being on jury duty isn't allowed...but this elder could judge fellow Witnesses at "judicial meetings."

(Ahem...) Drewmeister wrote, "They are saying that the bible, gods word, is not good enough on its own. That they need to add to gods word (which they has anyway with their pervirsion of the scriptures) as its not good enough....."

    BUT!!

The bible doesn't mention "the Jews who survived the holocaust", the "Catholics who were persecuted yet survived in 16th century England", or the "Bahai's in Iran"....

Another reason such blatant idiocy goes whizzing right over the heads of the JWs is that edict - er, "encouragement..." - against higher education - and that apparently includes going to one's local library and picking up books on history, religion, etc...

All such sources of information are considered "part of Satan's world"... Zid

SIR 82 - Good thread. By saying that " imperfect humans " do not get strength " simply from within " - it perpetuates the myth that all of us humans are guilt ridden, nasty little sinners who cannot trust our own goodness - because according to the WT society we HAVE no goodness within us. We are all born sinners- allegedly. A concept I totally disagree with since being out of the JW's for over 6 years now. I believe in the general goodness of people- until they prove it otherwise. Just another mind control tactic used to make JW"S feel bad about themselves and guilty for existing and breathing

The witlesses think they have the monopoly on being persecuted for righteousness' sake. They agree that others are persecuted, but for evil doing. Hence, you see non-witlesses being persecuted "for nothing". People get persecuted for atheism or Devil worship (in the Bible Belt, or during the First Dark Ages), but that was not for righteousness sake. People in other religions get persecuted "for evil doing" if they are Christians in a Muslim country, or they are Muslims or Hindus in a predominately Christian world. But, none of that is portrayed as being for righteousness' sake.

Fact is, many witlesses are being persecuted, not because of righteousness, but because they are blatantly wrong. Persecution because of righteousness is a result of being seen as a threat to the Establishment--and the witlesses do not do that. Rather, they coerce children to die on the blood issue, even making up terms like "mature minors". They force people to suffer because they are not allowed to carry a stupid card. They impose rules against defensive use of force (such as fighting to defend one's country). Plus, they ruin children's lives with no fun. All for an undefendable belief system--hardly for righteousness' sake.

And, just wait until they have to start defending "a generation" as "the group of people whose lives intersect with those who saw the beginning in 1914". They are going to have a miserable time with that one--especially if they try and use the scripture to back it up. They are going to be persecuted because that one is blatantly wrong. For sure, that does not constitute a threat to the Establishment.
