    What would happen?

Aren't these three related things some of the hardest to explain to interested people? Most JWs don't focus on these teachings at first and will instead focus on more appealing bible teachings. I think most everyone has some issue really believeing these to some extent. Some even have said that if there was a change to these that it wouldn't bother them.

What would happen if these teachings were abandoned? Could the rest of the "truth" still hold up? Or, are all somehow related to these 3 things?

ok, if 144,000 is dropped then how would the GB justify their self-proclaimed authority? They are the spokeman for the 'annointed'. The orgs authority structure rests on the 2-class doctrine. If they drop 1914 how would they explain their being God's chosen channel of truth?? They would also leave themselves defenseless against charges of false prophecying. They claim that 1914 WAS a ulfilled prophecy, that they simply had the logistics wrong but were watching for something significant in relation to God's kingdom. Drop that and then they are admitting nothing happened in that year- how would they defend false prophecying charges??

If they dropped 1914 they would have to re-define this generation yet again. They use that to make the end near. Also, to drop that would show 100 years of false prophecying and shots in the dark all to be nothing.

I should clarify: drop 144,000 in the sense of it being literal.

Sweety the 'truth' or 'good news' is all about 1914.....

    *** w81 5/1 p. 17 par. 3 If God Has an Organization, What Is It? ***

That of Jehovah’s Witnesses is really “gospel,” or “good news,” as of God’s heavenly kingdom that was established by the enthronement of his Son Jesus Christ at the end of the Gentile Times in 1914.

    _____________

Ulitimately it is an 'interpretation' ......... after all before 1914/1918/1919 it was 1874/1878 .

Our argument is that we were the only ones 'expecting', preaching expectation of 'something' in 1914, thus providing 'food at the proper time'

I don't think we have leaders with the 'balls' like Rutherford!

If 1914, 144,000, and this generation were dropped...

    Which generation?

The generation that saw 1914 or the subesquent overlapping generations?

They've changed the "generation" teaching at least three times since the early 90s. While it caused some of us to sit up and take note...and even leave...the core group is still there.

Some even have said that if there was a change to these that it wouldn't bother them.

There's your answer. It wouldn't bother them.

Fact is, most dubs don't really question doctrine, they just accept what they're told. Early on a recruit may question so as to understand but once someone is fullly indoctrinated they pretty much shut down the critical thinking abilities and just become drone robots following the counsel of the WTS.

We were debating the 1914 thing on another thread and while there is disagreement as to if the WTS will ever drop it, it was pretty much agreed that to the hardcore dub, they'll accept whatever mother tells them to accept.

What would happen if these teachings were abandoned? Could the rest of the "truth" still hold up? Or, are all somehow related to these 3 things?

The "truth" can't hold up now, with or without those teachings. Not all JW teachings are related to those things, but it can be argued that the core teachings, the very cornerstone of the religion is based on those teachings, but as has been the case before, as the WTS changes directions, most of the followers go along with them. Even when they lose some, they replace them with new recruits and born-ins.

With the ubiquitous use of "New Light" ... virtually anything could be changed.

What would happen if these teachings were abandoned?

    Not much.

Recruitment of outsiders in western lands is at a standstill at best.

Where there is growth, the appeal is "a paradise earth soon to come, to relieve you of your wretched poverty". People there don't give 2 hoots about 1914 or 144,000.

Where there is no growth, such as North America and Europe, conformity enforced by fear of shunning is what holds the troops together. They could print in the next Watchtower that pink teapots are in orbit around Saturn and JWs would defend it to the death - so a change to 1914 or 144,000 wouldn't be a big deal.

They don't NEED to drop the literal 144,000!

All they have to do is stop reporting the numbers!

Actually they could even suggest that 'partaking' is symbolic but the rest is still 'legalistic' .........so as to keep Jesus the mediator of only the 144,000 and the 'remnant and the responsible representatives of that class' still in power

What would happen if these teachings were abandoned?

Uh then they would be called Church of Scientology :-) wait a second, perhaps then they could merge with the Mormons and be Bigger and Richer, in that case they would have Elders that actually go out Door to Door, and prophets and apostles.

Can you imagine the possibilities of merging both Cults? Nothing could stop them.

SINS: I see that you have many questions in all the classic topics we all had when we discovered "the truth" about "the lies". But are you reaching conclusions? I see you interested in many topics. What are your thoughts? Are you still a devoted JW? whats your new position?
