Look in any interlinear, even the NWT Greek scriptures. Rev 22:15, and many others.

Even the universal symbol of pharmacy, two serpents entwined around a staff, with 2 wings atop it.

Which has roots to the god, Asklepios or something like that, as well as the Egyptian symbols.

If it is speaking about pharmacy, medicine, in what instance would you know if it was one referred to here in Revelation? Because wakeup call, just because a drug is illegal doesn't mean only those would be referred to here. Is it referring to mind altering ones. Mind altering only in sense of hypnotic state. ALL drugs. (would not seem to be the case, doesn't make sense why they would have been made then)

Just curious what some thoughts are on this.

It is translated as spiritism so that religious leaders can continue to oppress and control members of their faith. If it was purely medical, it would lie outside of their jurisdiction.

It is little different than the Borg's ban on blood transfusion. Blood transfusion is a medical principle. Blood eating is a dietary principle. But make it a scriptural commandment and suddenly it is a theological principle which can be used to oppress and control.

    Yay religion!

Many newer jws who came in long after 1973 don't realize that using tobacco, betel nut, coca leaves was not a matter of physical health but was/is considered spiritism by the WTS and that is the basis of df'ing. Here is the WTS explanation.

*** w73 6/1 pp. 338-339 par. 15 Keeping God’s Congregation Clean in the Time of His Judgment ***The Scriptural evidence points to the conclusion that they do not. As has been explained in other issues of this magazine, the Greek word phar·ma·ki´a used by Bible writers and translated "practice of spiritism" or "spiritistic practices" has the initial meaning of "druggery." (Gal. 5:20; Rev. 9:21) The term came to refer to spiritistic practices because of the close connection between the use of drugs and spiritism. Tobacco was also used initially by the American Indians in this way. It can properly be placed, therefore, in the category of addictive drugs like those that provided the source for the Greek term phar·ma·ki´a. The nicotine in tobacco does not have the same mental and emotional effects produced by "hard" drugs such as heroin or the so-called psychedelic drugs like LSD; yet nicotine addiction does definitely affect the mind and exercises a strong enslavement. In Europe at the close of World War II, in some instances cigarettes were worth more than money. Reportedly, prostitutes sold themselves for a few cigarettes, and ordinary people sacrificed even food ration coupons to obtain tobacco.

The pre-Christian Greek SeptuagintVersion uses the related Greek word phar´ma·kon (meaning literally "drug," but translated as "sorcery") at least five times. Idolatrous Queen Jezebel of ancient Israel practiced such phar´ma·kon (in the plural number) or "sorcery." (2 Ki. 9:22, LXX) She was executed by King Jehu acting as Jehovah’s executioner. Those who patronized the professional "sorcerers" or practicers of spiritism also participated in spiritistic practices and were condemned.

It is little wonder, then, that, in these days of widespread addiction to drugs and the growing use of tobacco, those indulging in such things should come under judicial observation. Jehovah God, the Supreme Judge, is at his spiritual temple and is specially scrutinizing those who profess to worship him in that holy place. He has promised to be a speedy witness against the sorcerers or the practicers of spiritism, which from ancient times onward had a connection with habit-forming, enslaving drugs.

With that being said Blondie, all 'mental health meds', even caffeine, coffee, etc, gotta go.

I can see smoking for the real bad health effects.

In the end, everyone is accountable for THEMSELVES. The danger of others telling you, is some may think smoking can't do, yet okay with caffeine. (caffeine is practically the same as heroine)

Everyone may find too, that they are hypocrites on how they judge. May not realize they are guilty in another sense of what they have condemned.

    its also translated "sorcery"

Didnt the springs at Delphi give off poisonous gases? When the prophets of the Oracle inhaled these, they went into a trance and started talking their "visions".

I am not a greek scholar - I want to know the etymology of the actual GREEK word and what the words it derives from originally meant.

    NARKISSOS - where art thou?

Vines comment on the Gk "Pharmakeia" as found in Gal 5 20: (as in the "Blue Letter Bible "site)

    Sorcery:

(Eng., "pharmacy," etc.) primarily signified "the use of medicine, drugs, spells;" then, "poisoning;" then, "sorcery," Gal 5:20, RV, "sorcery" (AV, "witchcraft"), mentioned as one of "the works of the flesh." See also Rev 9:21; 18:23. In the Sept., Exd 7:11, 22; 8:7, 18; Isa 47:9, 12. In "sorcery," the use of drugs, whether simple or potent, was generally accompanied by incantations and appeals to occult powers, with the provision of various charms, amulets, etc., professedly designed to keep the applicant or patient from the attention and power of demons, but actually to impress the applicant with the mysterious resources and powers of the sorcerer.

    ...............................................................................................................................................................................................................................

So there was originally a percieved link between drugs and the occult arts - that is one hell of a jump to apply that to smoking a cigarette ..

The medical profession has evolved over thousands of years from basically witch-doctoring practices to science. Healing without science = spiritism, occultism, and/or mysticism. So it is no wonder that pharmakia was adopted in this vein. Of course, there are entire industries now that still treat it as a mystical pursuit, but that's a topic for another day.

When the Interlinear Translation came out, this was one of the scriptures that made me realize the way the NWT twists things to suit the JW doctrines with just one little word mistranslated.

We had, back in the 1960s, a very weird case in Oklahoma City where an entire family was DFd for "pharma spiritism". They were seeing a Native American healer who gave them herbal tea as a cure, and made the mistake of telling people in the congregation how great it was.

Two of the servants got a real hard-case going about this, and confronted them. They would not back down, so they ended up being DFd under the technical term of "spiritism". Note - true "Satanic demonism" was never in question: this was really a sort of disagreement on a homeopathic medical practice.

It made no sense at all to many of the servants at the time (Marion Dunlap was one, he told me about this later) - but it still got done. The circuit servant was all for disfellowshipping them too, so that carried a lot of weight.
