Elders

Have you ever noticed (at least around here anyway) that the Elders are all Well to do? They all have nice houses and Nice cars.. and nice clothes.. but yet their wives dont work they are all fulltime pioneers.. and the Elders jobs arent the best in the world.. How can this be? I have never seen a Elder with a little house. a not so good car.. and only 2 or 3 suits.. Just on my mind wondering how they have the money to do this and also take alot of vacations.. anybody have a answer?

I can remember when I was small going to meetings
that most elders from my area were in the banger cars
wore the same suits over and over and lived in council houses or average bought homes, as I got older the younger elders were the ones with the designer suits and latest model cars,

I was in Liverpool for 7 years, then Newcastle for 4 years. All the Elders were "Council House" mentality - ie they didn't invest in the system as it was ending in 1975, 84 or when ever.

Its only been in the last 10 - 15 years than the "sons of Elders" came up and with thenm the standard of living. I remember one Elder who came to give a talk in Liverpool - a Stan Harland from Birkenhead - used to repair his own shoes he had that little money

I'm very much an "anti" but where I used to attend the elders wealth wasn't equal. Some were well off, but many were very poor, barely making a living. A few elders wives also worked full time.

A couple of elders seem to have all the money. They also were NOT honest businessmen.

lol jim, I'd forgotten about the 1975 thing,
actually nyt, I'd just put it down to a better standard of living
from better jobs kids growing up etc ,
I can remember my parents never bothering to
buy their rented house at discount because armageddon was round the corner and my dad was never one for life assurance pensions (cos who'd need them anyways)my mum however was much more the forward thinking of the two she took out insurance inspite of his views and was still insuring him years after theyd split in the hopes he'd drop dead, was always the first thing she'd check when our paths crossed

Hmm thanks for the input. i guess things are diffent from town to town.. eladers all seem well off around here in this very small hick town.. but maybe it is just here.

Yes, of course people's financial positions vary within each cong, just as they do in the community at large.

In the first congragation I attended, there was only one wealthy Elder. I do not know what he did for a living because I never asked.

In Raliegh,three of the Elders were of the same family(Dale) and had money, but they owned their own plumming company, and we all know plummers make a fortune. So I think they work just like the rest of us. Some better off than others. I still have fond memories of the Dale family.

I knew a couple of elders with money. They were the ones that had anyone from Brooklyn stay at their homes. They drove the big Chevy Suburbans out in service and poor little sisters with kids and an unbelieving mate could only hope that one day she would be invited into the car group that went in the Suburban. But alas such was not to be.

Then I knew the poor elders who lived in trailers. I know of one who lives in a 500 square foot trailer with his wife and two sons. His wife wears clothes that she buys at thrift stores. One day he criticized my husband for quitting a job where he worked only with dubs and took a job that paid twice as much because now he would be working with "worldlings." This elder doesn't pioneer because it's obvious he doesn't like service. But he feels superior because he's poor. He wants everyone to think he's poor because he puts "kindumb interests first." Really he's poor just because he's lazy.

So here NYtele has a point. Not all elders are the same.
