"[The film] serves as an absorbing snapshot of America's highly influential, reportedly 50-million-strong evangelical Christian movement." (Source)

I watched this documentary film via Netflix streaming last night. I think that many of you will enjoy it.

Thanks for posting this LeavingWT. Very interesting. As a counter to this, there is a dvd called "The Late Great Planet Church, the Rise of Dispensationalism". It shows what a current trend/fad this is in the overall history of the CHristian church. There are some interesting things in it that may be of interest for exJWs who study the history, back to Adventism, Miller, etc. (Warning: the dvd has a lot of talking heads, a little dry if you're not completely interested in the topic. LOL) I myself abandoned the dispensational views i was exposed to, after studying the Reformation, early church fathers, and .....Jehovahs WItnesses!

AuntBee -- That sounds like another interesting film. Thank you.

Has anyone seen 'Waiting for Armageddon'? What did you think?

It was fantastic, although it concentrated on the evangelical christian idea of armageddon. The parts about radical right-wing christians allying with radical right-wing jews to attempt to destroy the dome of the rock was pretty scary, though.

    Definitely worth seeing.

50 million strong is pretty big for a doomsday cult.

The "end time" beliefs associated with christian fundamentalism, appeal strongly to people with a lower class outlook or "radical present-orientation" -- namely, the kinds of people who buy lottery tickets, mindlessly make babies they can't support, get payday loans from check cashing businesses, etc. A person who has no faith in the long-term earthly future of his legacy is unlike to save, work long hours to build a business, advance his education, or do anything else that involves long-term sacrifice, other than foreign missions. (Gary North)

If you believe you'll fly off in the rapture at any moment, why bother getting an education, building a business, saving and investing your money or otherwise planning for a secular future you don't expect to see even if the actuarial tables continue to beat out rapture forecasts, generation after generation?

So true & sad at the same time.

Is there any mention of Jehovah's Witnesses in this film?

Nice to know that JWs have not got a monopoly of fruit-loop Christianity. I am in awe of the ease with which these various groups of believers are so totally convinced that theirs in shte absolute truth. Emotions run high but sadly brain activity is woefully low.
