Hello, just wondering if anyone could concisely tell me what the 'new light' is? Something about Armageddon being further away than thought? I just don't want to trawl through loads to get to the answer! Thanks.
New Light

Whenever they change position on something or someone brings up that the JW's used to smoke, celebrate Xmas and other things, the excuse was always that the "light would get brighter as we get closer to the end". It's a nifty was of saying that God is making them purer and more correct as armageddon get's closer.
I just read your bio, sounds like this is all fresh for you. Sorry about your sis.

You are probably thinking about the new explanation on 'Generation'. The Society has changed from teaching the Last Days are a finite number of years to an open ended undefined period of time. Within that framework of the Last Days persons claiming to be of the 'Anointed' or 144,000 can added to the rolls whereas they use to teach that the calling to be one of the 144,000 ended in 1935.

If the JW's were wrong on something it's "old light". If the JW's make a change in doctrine or position it's "new light".

Hi, faundy!!!
I don't pay attention much to doctrine threads... I think, though, that they changed it so a generation could be overlapping or some such silliness.
Anywho, we have missed you! I hope you and your family are doing well. A thread for your dad is resurrected every year so he is still loved and thought of here. And all the werewolfers miss you playing. ;)
Much love,
Jackie

And a quote from the article that is being referred to:
How, then, are we to
understand Jesus’ words about “this generation”?
He evidently meant that the lives of the anointed
who were on hand when the sign began to become
evident in 1914 would overlap with the lives of other
anointed ones who would see the start of the great
tribulation. So with this definition an annointed born in 1914 could die tomorrow, but if one of the annointed is born today their generations overlap so armageddon need not necessarily come until before the annointed born today passes away? Something like that, I think. A nice little extension, to be sure.

new light is the term used whenever a change in position on certain subjects is made.
Proverbs 4:18 But the path of the righteous ones is like the bright light that is getting lighter and lighter until the day is firmly established.
Much like the refining of metal, dross and impurities must be taken out so the silver & gold can come forth.
Since we are imperfect humans being used by Jehovah, our understanding of God's Word is flawed, since we are flawed. God used imperfect huumans throught His existence.
Apollos, an ardent, zealous Christian, preached constantly, but he had a small misunderstanding of doctrine. Two older, wiser sisters corrected him and he humbly accepted it.
God does not change. His word has been the same since day one, our understanding of it does since we are flawed.

"He evidently meant that the lives of the anointed
who were on hand when the sign began to become
evident in 1914 would overlap with the lives of other
anointed ones who would see the start of the great
tribulation."It would only have been evident if Jesus had said: "Those whose lives overlap the generation that sees all these things will be no means pass away until all these things occur." Since Jesus said nothing of the sort, it is only "evident" to those who stubbornly cling to an erroneous chronology.

Only, don't dare tell anyone you think the Governing Body is flawed....those are Apostate words.....
