    I realised something today...

We all happily accepted something really ridiculous.....something that if worded how I will word it now, we would have rejected as ridiculous, but after a moments thought, would have to concede.

We once followed the Governing Body because we believed they had supernatural powers.

How ridiculous you may say, no we didn't! .....wait....

    'Supernatural'

    1. of or relating to things that cannot be explained according to natural laws
    2. characteristic of or caused by or as if by a god; miraculous
    3. of, involving, or ascribed to occult beings
    4. exceeding the ordinary; abnormal

The GB claim to have a unique authority and ability in interpretation of ancient Hebrew texts (despite not being able to read it) and FUTURE predictions, including SPECIFIC dates and events. They use these texts and a supernatural power that helps them to interpret, to provide life, medical, spiritual, emotional, relationship, marriage, family, career, education, clothing, hobby, sex, advice.

What separates them from the average human, the average JW.....? A degree in ancient Hebrew studies? A degree in theology? A unique knowledge of bible history and writing? ....... NO .....they know all this and have the authority to lead 7 million people, because they were told they should via a supernatural force from a Jewish deity. They claimed that God anointed them personally.

In addition to this, they have for decades claimed multiple (lame) miracles such as making a tv station online in record time, installing new printers during miraculous good weather etc etc.

Wow..... if I had a '£' for every time I said ..."How dumb were we!"

Good point. Goes back to the anchor that is the strongest force in a cult. We belong to the one true religion, and we can only have access through them.

    Give me a break, man. I was a born-in.

Forgive me for intially drinking in what ever my Mom, Dad, maternal and paternal grandparents and others gave me from earliest memories. I once clutched the Awake and Watchtower like they were living evidence of "God's revealed truth". My neighbor, a Seventh-Day Adventist, revered Ellen G White. I lived in a wider community of Catholics and Anglicans. One parrot is as good as another, color differences aside.

The fact I am now out and thriving in a world that I was told would end long before now is a testament to my superbly active brain.

Who gives a toss what I once believed when I was younger? People are raised being taught all manner of cray, tall stories. The JWs have absolutely no monopoly on crazy tall stories. Religion, by definition specializes in bizarre - but allegedly "true" claims. The Bible is replete with crazy tall stories which most in the west are raised to unquestioningly accept.

As Richard Dawkins says, religious beliefs are more often than not an accident of birth.

The litmus test is not what you were born and raised to believe, but your ability to stand back from those early-taught beliefs and boldly question them.

Don't take it so personally, it is just an indication of the power of indoctrination. In the cold light of day, what we believed was ridiculous, yet we all whole-heartedly did at one point believe the governing body were more than human via supernatural powers from God. The pope claims the same supernatural role also.

It fascinates me, but I am honestly embarrassed, I was likewise brought in via my parents so feel no shame, I didn't choose it, but it is none the less utter hilarity to think we believed Anthony the Terd was magical.

Maybe dumb is the wrong word, but it is how you are left feeling when someone cons you,

I have to agree, don't take what he posted personally, as we grow away from this born in $hit, we come to revelations that indoctrination would have previously blinded us to. When that happens you want to talk to somebody about it, with exjw's here its an understanding place to vent your thoughts. It's healthy to express yourself and help get yourself on solid ground outside the cult.

Don't let any of this insult you. As much as it is true on this and any other religion. I tend to think most of the ones that are critical thinkers, only accepted some form of initial contact with the religion because it was brought to them by someone they trusted. You are unlikely to listen to such message from a total stranger. That is why nowdays most of the growth comes from within.

    Thanks for the topic.

Getting people to think is step one.

Yes Snare, goog point, well made. Years ago I did desperately want to ask someone of the anointed how they received the information that was put in the Watchtower. This was when the FDS included all the anointed before the nulite.

But it was not the done thing to question someone of the anointed. I wish I'd asked anyway, might have left sooner.

“The brother went down to get the mail before breakfast, and when we had breakfast he said, ‘Brother Riemer, I got a new Watchtower this morning, and do you know the first thing that Ma and I do when we get that Tower? We kneel down before we take the wrapper off and ask Jehovah to make us worthy to see what the message is that Jehovah has for us. Now, before we take the wrapper off, will you kneel down and pray with us?’ How different that elective elder was from this humble couple who appreciated Jehovah’s organization” (Watchtower, Sept. 15, 1964, p 574)
