What I like about soccer, at least in Europe, is that teams who finish low in their division get relegated to a less prestigious league, and teams from those less prestigious leagues can advance to upper echelon leagues. This means that players' salaries are affected if they get relegated or advance, so players are going all out in their play so their teams win, unlike some NFL/NBA/MLB players who don't really care about their team, just their salary. For them, losing consistently doesn't have the consequences that it does in European football.

Palimpset, I checked out that PDF. The PDF represents households and not organized sports. So, I'm thinking this applied to what families played together or did individually. Exercise walking had the highest activity. When I googled number one sport played in America, I got American football.

In thousands (265,381 represents 265,381,000), except rank.
Data are based on a questionnaire mailed to 10,000 households. The questionnaire asked the male and female heads of households and up to two
other household members who were at least seven years of age to indicate their age, the sports in which they participated in 2007, and the number of days of participation in 2007. A participant is defined as an
individual seven years of age or older who participates in a sport more than once a year. See source for methodology.]

Although the survey was done by household, the numbers in the data set represent individuals, not families. I can't replicate your football result in a search, but depending on the keywords used, I got soccer, football, basketball, and baseball all as answers to the question of the most played (not most popular) sport in America. Like everything, it depends on wording and methodology. So I'm going to stick with figures measuring people actively involved in organized sports, since that seems to me to be the best way to do it.
But ultimately, it doesn't really matter. All that matters is that it's still a very popular sport for American athletes -- no one disputes that -- and the media miss out on a huge opportunity by continuing to ignore a fan base that could be easily cultivated. That's the real message people should take away.

Sad to see the US get knocked out, but hopefully Ghana can make it to at least the semi-finals. It would be nice to see an African team do well, since all the other CAF teams were so disappointing.
I echo the general sentiment of others on this thread about soccer not becoming a "major" sport in this country. Someone touched on this point earlier, but a big problem lies in the fact that many American soccer fans like myself don't watch the domestic leagues (the MLS being the biggest one). I'm a Man. U. fan, I watch EPL games on cable, I watch Champions League matches when they show on TV. I find the quality of soccer in Europe to be far better than that in this country. The soccer from the Mexican league is better as well, if you watch the spanish language channel games.
As long as the US continues to qualify for the WC, I think most people will care about the tournament. But will people watch the MLS, or even for that matter the US team in the Confederations Cup or the CONCACAF Gold Cup? That I doubt.
