I wrote about that very thought a few years ago:
Well, DGP...
Blind, unquestioning obedience to the "leaders' " commands is one of the most obvious marks of a cult...
Even if they're asking you to turn down a blood transfusion that may save your life...
Or drink poisoned Kool-Aid...
[I'll bet Kool-Aideā¢ just HATES that unpleasant connection in peoples' minds!!! Anytime one mentions "Drinking the Kool-Aide" - well, we all know what that means... ]
Zid
Actually, they drank Flavor-Aid, not Kool Aid.
Yes it is all about obedience. One of my aunt's friends is d/f'd and not doing well. They were getting regular updates about her from a sister in the KH. I often ask about her because she is really nice, and I don't have her contact info. The last time I asked about her my aunt was like, "oh the sister that knows doesn't go to our KH anymore, she was being disobedient anyway." It is really sad because the sister could use a friend, she doesn't have anybody.
"CS Lewis talks about this kind of mental conflict in "The Screwtape Letters" - That some people are able to live double lives because they have learned how to live with several contradictory ideas rattling around in their head at the same time."
As did secular Orwell in "1984"...

dear dgp...
you said: "Maybe this is a mistaken impression. But I am sure that mere obedience is the idea that pervades the organization from top to bottom. What I mean is, all the leaders, from the governing body down, only expect everyone else to take orders. What those orders are is a secondary matter"
isn't following a shepard a sheeplike quality?...yes it is...and when the Holy Spirit falls on the gb and everyone is asked to follow along a different path...hopefully NONE will be lost...
