( The real question should be does anybody understand their symbology?)
THE MASONIC FOUNDATIONS
OF THE UNITED STATES
The Founding Fathers
The Masonic Architecture of Washington, D.C.
The Great Seal of the United States
The George Washington Masonic National Memorial
George Washington's Masonic Correspondence
THE FOUNDING FATHERS"Christians have been led to believe that the government of the United States of America is based on the basic principles of Christian morality, which have their origin in the Scriptures. Notable for propagating this misinformation are D. James Kennedy, author of a book promoting astrology, and Peter Marshall, Jr. (son of the late U.S. Senate Chaplain) who wrote The Light and The Glory. However, both of these ministers are members of the Council for National Policy, a secret organization founded by the globalist Council on Foreign Relations which has an anti-Christian agenda.
Historical evidence militates against the view that those who formulated the fundamental documents of American government were Christians. To the contrary, not a few who wrote and signed the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation and the U. S. Constitution were Deists, Theists and Freemasons. Webster's Dictionary defines "theism" and "deism":
Theism - "belief in the existence of a god or gods; specif: belief in the existence of one God viewed as the creative source of man and the world who transcends yet is immanent in the world."
Deism - "a movement or system of thought advocating natural religions based on human reason rather than revelation, emphasizing morality, and in the 18th century denying the interference of the Creator with the laws of the universe."
One recent historical account of Freemasonry, THE TEMPLE & THE LODGE, boast instead of the profound influence of Freemasonry on the founding documents, (while carefully trying to avoid creating the impression of a Masonic conspiracy):
"Of the fifty-six signatories of the Declaration of Independence, only nine can definitely be identified as Freemasons, while ten others may possibly have been. Of the general officers in the Continental Army, there were so far as documentation can establish, thirty-three Freemasons out of seventy-four. Granted the known Freemasons were, as a rule, more prominent, more instrumental in shaping the course of events than their unaffiliated colleagues...
"On 11 June, (the Continental) Congress appointed a committee to draft a declaration of independence. Of the five men on this committee, two - Franklin and...Robert Livingston - were Freemasons, and one, Robert Sherman, is believed, though not confirmed, to have been. The other two, Thomas Jefferson and John Adams - were not, despite subsequent claims to the contrary. The text of the declaration was composed by Jefferson. It was submitted to Congress and accepted on 4 July 1776. The nine signatories who can now be established as proven Freemasons, and the ten who were possibly so, included such influential figures as Washington, Franklin and, of course, the president of the Congress, John Hancock. The army, moreover, remained almost entirely in Freemasonic hands...As we shall see, it is in the Constitution that the influence of Freemasonry is most discernible...
"At last, on 25 May 1787, the Constitutional Convention opened in Philadelphia and commenced its efforts to devise the machinery of government for the new nation. The first voice to make itself heard in any significantly influential way was a characteristically Freemasonic one, that of Edmund Randolph.. Randolph...a member of a Williamsburg lodge, had become Washington's aide-de-camp. Subsequently he was to become Attorney-General, then governor of Virginia and Grand Master of Virginia's Grand Lodge. During Washington's presidency, he was to serve as the first Attorney-General of the United States, then the first Secretary of State.
"...There were ultimately five dominant and guiding spirits behind the Constitution - Washington, Franklin, Randolph, Jefferson and John Adams. Of these, the first three were active Freemasons, but men who took their Freemasonry extremely seriously - men who subscribed fervently to its ideals, whose entire orientation had been shaped and conditioned by it. And Adam's position, though he himself is not known to have been a Freemason was virtually identical to theirs. When he became president, moreover, he appointed a prominent Freemason, John Marshall, as first Chief Justice of the Supreme Court."MORE

EU to hold atheist and freemason summit
LEIGH PHILLIPS19.07.2010 @ 21:16 CET
EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - Brussels is to hold an EU summit with atheists and freemasons in the autumn, inviting them to a political dialogue parallel to the annual summit the bloc holds with Europe's religious leaders.
While the EU is a secular body, the three European presidents, of the commission, parliament and EU Council, alongside two commissioners, on Monday met with 24 bishops, chief rabbis, and muftis as well as leaders from the Hindu and Sikh communities. The annual dialogue, which has taken place since 2005, is for the first time this year made legally obligatory under Article 17 of the Lisbon Treaty.
Under pressure from Belgium, which constitutionally protects and financially supports humanist organisations as well as churches, the EU has been forced to hold a mirror-image summit, but of atheists, scheduled for 15 October.
However, in a move that perplexed and annoyed humanist groups, the EU atheist summit will also welcome under the rubric of ‘non-religious groups', the Freemasons, the secretive fraternal organisation, according to commission spokeswoman Katharina von Schnurbein.

"Mason" spelled backwards is "No Sam". As in Uncle Sam? Eh? Get it? They want to destroy America!

He had a Masonic wedding and my husband was a little upset because he didn't invite us to the wedding. Finally, the guy said he didn't invite us because we're Catholic.
That probably had a lot more to do with the individual than with the Freemasons. It's the Roman Catholic Church that is vehemently hostile towards Freemasons. Freemasons are critical of religion, of course, but they don't single out Catholics as a rule. The Freemasons absolutely accept Catholics -- I come from a long line of Catholic Freemasons -- but most Catholics don't want to join due to various papal pronouncements against the organization. In fact, as you probably know, the Church can officially deny communion to Catholics based solely on their membership in the Freemasons. So maybe this man's problem was due to the fact that your church is against what he believes in, and not some personal or organizational vendetta against Catholics.
As far as the symbolism goes, of course they know what they mean. That's why they picked them as representations to use in their practices. They're also told about the importance of the various symbols and stories as new initiates. (Not everything, of course, but it all comes in time.) That's how all groups work -- you join, you learn as you go on, and then you make evaluations once you have all of the info. That applies to religious groups, fraternal organizations, even colleges and workplaces.
Since they're expected to make their own interpretations and evaluations as they go along, most Freemasons are aware of the original intent behind Masonic symbolism but eventually develop their own understandings and meanings. That's to be expected of a group where everyone is expected to approach things intellectually, to question everything around them, and to achieve their own enlightenment through their own means.
It actually is somewhat reminiscent of Catholicism, in the sense that people know the original meanings but treat them in a more fluid manner now. For example, polls say that the majority of Catholics in the U.S. don't truly believe in transubstantiation, but they'll still take the wafer. You can respect a tradition or practice without thinking it's absolute truth.
Are there higher-ups who have all the juicy details and genuinely believe in the "crazy" stuff? Sure. Do I think those juicy details are earth-shattering? Nah. Most Freemasons are little old men hanging out together on weekends. I'm really not seeing them having a lot of success overthrowing the world in their tiny Shriner cars...
(Disclosure: I come from four long lines of active Masons/OES; my grandfather was 31°.)

I don't know, if the general members have any clue
I doubt anyone on this board would know, but if they do, which of the mason groups actually understands the reason for their symbols and have a specific reason for doing so?
Which kinda implies that you do. I assure you, I've got to know many masons. I would find it impossible to belive that they somehow missed it all yet those visiting conspiracy websites have better idea. Masons are some of the most well read and superbly informed individuals you would ever meet. This topic has been rubbed to death on this board for a long time, search the board mate

The general low level masons are as duped as wt publishers. They're into secret handshakes, conventions and business deals, but they have no idea what they've gotten into. Like jw's getting baptized. It takes a long time before figuring out what's going on. Most never do. If they understood the symbolism of their "masonic baptism" they'd renounce the whole thing immediately. http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=1956058781270914781&hl=en&emb=1#

If you do your research you will see that the only "conspiracy" Free Masons have is promotion of democracy and freedom of men (and women), and it has been so from before anyone even knew they were secretly meeting under flickering light of candles during middle ages. Saying that ingelligent men didn't know how to research meanings for themselves is absurd. Surely there are individuals as always who prefer that someone else thinks for them but most Free Masons I met are way more informed and your "average Joe" Freemasonry is as far away from JWism as it can possibly be, the only thing in comon is belief in God i.e. "Grand Architect", and many don't even see it as a person but as "creative principle" whatever that is. As for symbols, you don't even have to be a Free Mason to find meaing, a visit to local library will do.

Did you ever wonder why politicians who lose elections aren't all broken up with emotion?
- Vatican Power, Witchcraft
And Top US Officials
US High-Level Officials Are Only Subservient
Vassals For Vatican Power and Witchcraft- ".........Recently, Luciferian Emperor Bush said that his brother Jeb became a Third Degree Knight of Columbus. And 33rd Degree Freemason. Southern Baptist devotee of the pagan goddess Gaia Al Gore is also one of them. It doesn't matter who the Archbishop of New York selects the same wicked Jesuit agenda will be served by his puppet in the White House who is nothing more than a slave to the Jesuits of Georgetown University, his local boss Theodore Cardinal McCarrick who was trained by Jesuits at Fordham and ordained to the Romanist priesthood by Francis Cardinal Spellman in 1958 and his national political boss Jesuit-trained Edward Cardinal Egan." There of course would be no problem with Catholics involved in government if history hasn't already proved that the Vatican and Jesuit Order's intentions have always been to destroy freedom, not advance it. Here again listen to a Jesuit and Vatican researcher connect the dots between high military leaders trained at Jesuit-Georgetown and connected to the Knights of Malta, a powerful organization in America fronting Vatican power and dominance over U.S. foreign and domestic policy..........."

Oh dear lord, we just had a Rense citation here. Only a matter of time now before we get to learn about the UFOs controlling our minds, the government's plans to kill us through cell phone radiation, and the Satanic microchips the Jews will be installing in us all shortly.
