Many years ago (20+) I read about people who would search out the public tax records in Florida for vacant land owned by out of state individuals. he would file bogus quit claim deeds in his favor and then turn around and sell the land for a bargain price later. The real owners wouldn't realize they hadn't gotten a real estate tax bill until a year or two had passed and then they had a legal mess to clean up. The scoundrels had cashed the checks and left town by then. I assume laws are in place to prevent this from happening today, I hope.
