I would highly recommend a book I have just finished reading on this same issue: FATED SKY by Benson Bobrick.

Among a host of other examples, the author points to the importance of the 'star' in the story of Jesus - remember it was the 'star' that led the wise men to the babe in the manger, etc. Too many examples to list, but I think you might find it fascinating.
My own take, after having read the book, is that I have a new respect for astrology and its influence on history, religion and science. Without it, we would not have astronomy or chemistry; the New World may not have been discovered! (interesting info on Columbus). Anyhow, I would not be surprised one bit if the Gospels were astrological allegories...
