Egg and I were treated out to dinner three times last weekend by out of state visiting relatives. Just found out last night that they don't believe in tipping, at all!
We suggested the places to eat and frequent those places ourselves. How embarrassing to find out they left nothing for our attentive hosts.
Of course, Egg and I will be remembered by them.
Has this happened to you?

In Australia tipping is not really customary, though at a good restaurant I usually give 10%. I was shocked during my recent trip to LA that 18-20% was expected. But I have heard that in the US the wages for wait staff is far lower, so tipping is a practical requirement.
I used to be a server, so I usually tip a minimum of 25%. But I leave a dollar or less if the service is lousy. Some servers find that to me more insulting than leaving nothing at all.
I leave $20 on the table before I get served ... I lower or leave that amount depending on the service
How awful for you White Dove! Be sure to speak to the servers next time you visit the restaurants and apologize; leave a nice tip too! Oh, and never let those people take you to dinner again!!!
We tip 20% routinely. 15% - 10% for poor service.
Both our kids have worked as servers so we know how hard they work and how it hurts them when they are tipped poorly.
I've always tipped well, and now even better since I've been working as a part time bartender in addition to my 9 to 5 job.
Bottom line is if you can't afford 15-20% then stay home. No need to go all "Mr. Pink" on the wait staff who is making nothing just because you disagree with the system. Go be a revolutionary somewhere else.
The exception of course, is bad service. That's their/our job. If it's done poorly, that should be reflected in the tip.

I always try to leave 20 percent, myself.
Equally embarrassing is people who stiff delivery drivers. This is a sore spot for me, having been one myself. They're using their own vehicles and gas to bring you your food to your doorstep.

I always tip for good service even though it isn't seen quite as customary as in the USA as the UK minimum wage doesn't give you a great standard on living.

But I have eaten with people that don't believe in tipping, there was this one guy that after we paid everybody agreed to leave their own tip. He left 7 cents, yeahhh...7 cents. Everybody was looking at him like what the heck, and he was being serious! His excuse was that in his country they get paid less (and he was a JW!) LOL
