JWoods: Hawking is one of my biggest heros ever since i read one of his books as a Kid.

What Hawking is suggesting is essentially a self-creating series of universes to eternity without an external source of power.

First off: "without an external source of power". is that his words or yours? Secondly, stuff pop in and out of existence all the time in our universe, i think what he propose is somewhat similar but on a much larger scale.

It violates the laws of thermodynamics and the concept of entropy.

this is where it gets interesting. Which laws does it violate, and how does it go against even the concept of entropy? Which concept?

When you try to answer the question, pay particular attention to the fact the shape of the universe is driven by a very large force (the vacuum energy) and most of the laws you find on google are formulated for vessels of a fixed size.

Also, you should consider the meaning of the "thermal equilibrium" in the above, in particular since the change in geometry of the universe mean it require FTL communications to get a message from us to the other side of the universe. What does equilibrium mean in that context? Since your slammin Hawkings as a old man, i assume you have such basic things figured out, because Hawkings sure as hell does.

The theologist would say the universe requires the outside influence of a God-Creator.

In the red cornor, we have MAGIC!

The conventional cosmologist would say that there was an unknown outside source of order prior to the big bang, and that the universe is slowly winding down, and the entropy (disorder) of the universe is slowly increasing.

He would properly say it this way: The universe began in a high-energy state where fewer microconfigurations was avaliable and thus had smaller entropy. The rate of expansion and cooling of the universe is making more states avaliable and hence higher entropy. But i figure thats what you mean, right?

Hawking has been getting further and further outside established science for some time now. He is tolerated more as a celebrity than as a contributing physicist these days.

Well, and we all know that the moment a person stop puplishing world-class articles, their oppinion is like that of Paris Hilton and we should ask why we "tolerate" them at all.

    Gah.

Hawkings explanation of black-hole radiation is a classic. Its properly still going to be taught long after the pyramids are gone. Thats more than most people accomplish in their life.
