I've been wondering the same thing lately.
I think people are beginning to understand who or what God is differently nowadays. The notion of a stern judgemental sky daddy seems a bit archaic in today's scientific technologically based world.
There is a transformation taking place and it's scaring the hell out of the religious powers, be it The Pope or The Governing Body. In short, their purse strings are feeling the pinch and they don't like it. With conventional religion, you are either a Bible God believer or an atheist. They don't allow for any other definition of God.
