I argued minimus on this before, Cheeze. It didn't go so well for me. If you can't beat em...well...

I must still be like you.
Wow, I'm glad you didn't spend more than a minute thinking that up.
Yes, we're both still ignorant.

Still I do care about many Witnesses. My dear mom, I love to death. She's intelligent and wise but she still adheres to the illogical beliefs that she cannot properly defend. It's too bad because people WASTE their lives on bullshit, try to get others to do the same and the result is they live in a fantasy world and judge everyone for the offense of not ascribing to their stooopid religion....and so the cycle goes.

^ Agreed. And I concede to calling the religion itself stupid. I think many religions create prejudice, bred from pride and ignorance, which prevents most followers from judging things clearly, impartially.
The DC this summer had a part on pride and condemned every form of pride but RELIGIOUS pride. In doing so, they are promoting prejudice.
So, yeah, I feel ya. When family members (who are typically smart and rational) shove logic to the side and refuse to look at it, it's clear that their religion is dumbing them down... in that respect.

Succumbing to cult mind control has little (perhaps nothing) to do with intelligence. So Dubs aren't stupid for becoming JWs or even for remaining JWs. They appear stupid because due to the cult mind control they have effectively handcuffed their minds and do not use them to their full potential. Add to that the irrational phobias and downright false and unsupported doctrines and they look dumber than your average doofus.

"stupid is as stupid does"----said by a man wiser than Solomon.

I think we may be guilty of perceiving our former comrades through a filter. Yes, undoubtedly some JW's are stupid, frankly I'd say loads of ex-JW's are stupid too particularly those who repeat destructive patterns of behavior. There is nothing enlightened in being judgmental or provincial.
I'd rather be friends with a doubting JW than a fundamentalist ex-dub.

wow, what a thread !
while I do not consider myself as highly intelligent, I do have the ability to discern someones thinking abilities to a degree. Through my job, I deal with a large number of all different kind of people, among them many with college degrees, even sometimes univ-professors.
I frequently have to argue against them in certain cases, and I am able to see someones capabilities on their field.
The same time I know a number of JW, some with, some without higher education. A few of them I consider the even most intelligent persons I met. ( of course, I also know quite a number of stupid ones too)
They have their doubts on certain areas, but all, and thats the main problem, accept the WTS as Gods org.
It seems, that for some, their intelligence might even be an obstacle of seeing simple truths, since their mind finds creative ways of defending their premisse.
So, among the brightest bulbs in the sky, there are also some JW, they just refuse to aapply the same critical thinking, of which they are certainly capable of, to the teachings of the WTS.
