I think we do, we need to cut out the crap and leave the good stuff.
Things to cut:
Gay people deserve death
Flood Story
The Exodus of the Jews
Sodom and Gomorrah
just the first few that pop into my head.

Sounds a bit like the "Jesus Seminar." They took votes on what they thought Jesus really would and wouldn't have said. The only things they were all sure he said in the Lord's Prayer was, "Our Father..."
Flood StoryThe Exodus of the JewsSodom and GomorrahI wouldn't want to get rid of these accounts. They have multi-level meanings, imo. Some of the Jewish commentaries on these stories are really enlightening.
Tee hee hee.
We don't need no stinkin' abridged Bible!
If you can't stomach a paraphrased edition, how on earth are you to tolerate an abridged one?

Imagine, a world where no one knows who Adam and Eve were, no one debates over whether the Great Flood actually happened or not.
A beautiful vision indeed!

Other things to cut...slavery is good, rape is good (even giving up your own daughters for it), infanticide is good, genocide is good...
But if we cut all this stuff all that would be left is enough text to fill a Post-It. "In the beginning...the end."
If you don't like the Bible, ignoring it is always an option.

I do like the Bible, and truthfully I don't think any of it is evil by nature. But the misuse of it makes me want to abridge it!

Oh, it's the misuse of the Bible that troubles you.
Why didn't you say so in the first place?
Don't worry; those guilty will receive a heavier judgment.
As well they should!
