Europe court to hear Jehovah Witness tax case against France 9-29-10

The European Court of Human Rights said Wednesday it had agreed to consider a case brought by the Jehovah Witness Christian sect against the French government over taxation of donations.

In its request, the group alleged an infringement of the right to religious freedom saying the French government had tried to curtail its activities by demanding in May 1998 taxes on donations from its followers.

The sect said the move was an attempt to end the autonomy of religious communities.

French authorities say the donations were not raised from a religious source and so were subject to the same rules as other donations.

The 1998 demand was for 45 million euros (61 million dollars) at the time, but this amount had since reached 57.5 million euros, according to France.

It involves donations from 250,000 people over four years, an average amount of four euros per person a month between 1993 and 1996.

The court, based in the French city of Strasbourg, however rejected a case of religious discrimination against the Jehovah's Witnesses.

I don't understand the final sentence. Did they reject the critical central claim of the case already?

Metatron: I think that last sentence was referring to the recent decision in favor of Jehovah's Witnesses in Russia. But I'm only guessing.

That's what it sounds like to me as well.

I've been wondering what's been happening with this case. Ynot, you're right - if the WTS loses, I can see them shutting down any operations they have in France qicker than you can say "show me the money".

This could really have an impact on their operations around the world.

Should be interesting. I still think that you should not treat one religion differently from the others. I say, tax them all.

I still think that you should not treat one religion differently from the others. I say, tax them all.-- I would agree to treat all religions equally if all religions were required to show they actually did good for the community in which they reside then I can at least understand the no taxing of religions. We all know the wt does no charity works whatsoever. Many religions have soup kitchens, clothing drives, collect for orphans etc.... Their missionary work includes putting water in villages with no water, building homes, schools, etc...... If a so called 'religion' does nothing for their fellow man then they are simply a business, much like the wt. Nothing more than a publishing company going around trying to get more built in customers to buy their rags.

    amen!

    pay caesar unto caesar!

So if they lose..... this could be a perfect excuse to have R&F print off their own magazines, donate via JWgift, and make Co-lites carry the burden of CO/DOs who only communicate by skype......

I am sure there will be an appeal and in that time they could sell Bethel-France......(or phony sell it to a private JW/dummy corporation...who can take more time renovating it to have better market value= $$$$$$$$$$$$$)

Germany is already handling the load of the other closures....

If the WTS bailed from France in an official capacity......how would they collect the monies?

Whilst the court is in France it is part of the European Union and independent of French Government.

I have lost track of what the ruling from the human rights court was for the russia issue however I was a little surprised due to Russia NOT being part of the EU so any rulling would have no effect anyway!

In light of recent events in France (the Roma issue) don't be surprised if whatever way the ruling goes, the french do what they want!
