On the back cover of the Feb. 22/02 Awake, we have the
enchanting story of a young man who won a prize for an
essay "The Space Race- The World's Biggest Money Waster".
He credits his victory in this anti-intellectual pursuit
to information gleaned from the Awake.

The space race has brought far more than Teflon or Tang.
It has impelled a huge number of practical advances like
the Global Positioning System - while misused by terrorists,
this system is a boon to countries all over the world -
even those who had nothing to do with space exploration.
Satellite television and especially satellite communications
now permit instant access - with a portable phone almost
    anywhere on earth.

Exploration also has provided wonders like pictures from
the Hubble telescope - featured on the cover of the
    Society's "Creation" book.

War? Currently Space exploration has generated a growing
space city - the International Space Station - built
and manned by former enemies - Americans and Russians,
together with contributions from Europe and Japan.

But wait... that's not all! The Space race is also
generating REAL HOPE for relief from suffering by thousands
or millions of people. Read "InformationWeek" magazine
    (Jan.21,02 pg.20) Scientists have created a breakthrough
artificial retina for the blind - soon to be tested by
surgeons later this year! "Space exploration and semi-
conductor technologies led to the discovery." It's based
on thin film growth research - that could only be accomplished
    in space!.

Still more! The space race caused a boom in miniaturization
of electronics - leading to discoveries like the artificial
cochlear implant - enabling the deaf to hear again(read about
Rush Limbaugh's recovery of hearing!!!) Perhaps 200,000
people in the U.S. will benefit from cochlear implants
in the next decade - from there on, the world!

    The much maligned 'Space Race'
    DELIVERING on dreams and hopes,
while Watchtower promises go unfufilled and sterile,
    decade after decade.

no wonder they don't like it

    metatron,

Also the discovery of vast amounts of He-3 on the moon which can potentially be used for ultra clean nuclear energy.....extraction is an issue but , still...

I once wrote a letter to NASA asking what all the spin-off inventions and discoveries from the space race were. No answer. I guess they're too busy dealing with FOIA requests. But I'd be willing to bet the spin-offs number in the thousands if not more.

The Watchtower? I say they're a cult, and I say fuck 'em.

I got a kick out of them refering to the awake as a reputable journal worthy of actually using for research. See how far that reference in a research paper would get you.

Wow! I've never heard the ethic of our cause, the motivation that drives us expressed quite so eloquently!!

    Seriously Francois - you rock!

So much has come from space exploration that I can’t even imagine the world without it.

If we were able to remove from this world in an instant all the inventions and processes that were developed or greatly improved as a result of our involvement in space many things would be quite different. Some of you would be hungry, many of you would have much less free time, and some of you would be dead. Oh yes, and none of you would be reading this right now. Yes the race for space has had a very positive impact on mankind indeed. Eat Shit And Die Awake!

    One small step for Freeman…..

I'm sure that the brothers in the Taliban Congregation also considered the Space Program a big waste of money too.

    Francois,

If you are serious about learning more about the spin-offs from space exploration, you can get a free subscription to "NASA Tech Briefs." It is a monthly magazine highlighting recent ideas and inventions derived from the space program. I get it myself, and it is great. If you are interested, I can get you information on how to subscribe.

As a jw, i was told the awake, etc was giving me a college level education. Reading of the awake for 30 yrs enables me to maintain myself in a small apt, while painting houses owned by people who got a college education the nonjw way. Hmmmm

Hey Chuck, could you post that information to the board please? I'd be very interested in reading that myself.
    Thanks!!!

    I don't need to fight
    To prove I'm right
I don't need to be forgiven.
