  Mary, have you seen "My Life in Ruins" with Nia Varalos? Great movie. There is one scene where a tour guide refers to some Canadian tourists as "idiot Americans." The woman goes off and says "Did you just call us AMERICANS?"

  LOL! Nope, never saw it, but I can believe it. I remember one episode of The Simpsons where Bart falls for a girl whose father is Rainier Wolfecastle (the guy who sounds like Arnie). She tells Bart that they're going to Toronto to film a movie and Bart goes "My god, you're going to Spain?!" In the next scene, Bart tells Homer they've got to go to Toronto, Canada and Homer replies "Why should we leave America to go visit America Junior?"

  I remember organizing a public lecture for our department a few years ago and our guest speaker was from New York. He would always tell me that whenever he'd go back to NYU some of his colleagues would ask 'how are our Canadian friends doing?' His response was always: They look like us, they talk like us, but they're not us.

  True. Canadians do not jibber jabber away in another language like a proper foreigner ought to do.

  The problem my friend is this. Hispanic refers to the language. Mexican refers to the country he is from.

  I am Hispanic and Mexican. Because I speak Spanish and am from Mexico.

  Is it inapropiate to call you? English because you speak english? that would be mistaken rather than inappropiate.

  If someone looks Latino and you call him Hispanic or Mexican. they might take offense because they might not be none of those. I have a GF who looks like he would speak spanish and come from mexico but she is none of those. She is American and speaks no spanish.

  I was speaking with a co-worker about another co-worker. The context of the conversation was what nationality this person was. I stated that I believed(from having spoken to the individual before) that he was Mexican. The co-worker responded that the correct term is Hispanic. I replied that I understood that, but this specific person was from Mexico, which is why I referred to him as Mexican.

  It wasn't some vague, foreign-looking person of whom I had no knowledge. It was someone that I know, and have spoken to.

  It is neither inappropriate, nor mistaken to refer to a person from England as English. Being that I'm from America, that makes me American(among other things), just as someone from Canada would be Canadian. How is referring to someone from Mexico as Mexican any differen't?
