I find that the spirits of living people are more pain in the ass than dead ones.

    how about switching positions? :-)

I agree with some of the reasoning in your post (the uknown), partially, CL, but I beg you to reconsider the logic above. Please just go with me on this...

    • Each of us currently lacks belief in an infinite number of real and imaginary things. That is how we start life. Lack of belief is neutral ground. It's only as you grow and learn that you build your perception of the existence of other beings.
    • Your previously neutral lack of belief in the spirit realm was filled in when you adopted (or were fed) a new perception as a child.... of god, satan, angels, and demons, correct?
    • That perception was built upon yet another set of presuppositions: that the Bible is the word of God, infallible perhaps, and that Mom & Dad, and the Society, were instructing you properly from it.
    • Now to accurately assess things you must clear out the bias and presupposition that was placed there early in life.

I started the same way as you but in recent years realized that many concepts in the ol' dome were based on a faulty foundation. I peeled away layer after layer of presupposition until I got back to a lack of belief in the spirit realm.

    Hey SBC,

Interesting thoughts. Ok, looking at it through you view, I can see how you feel disbelief is viewed as neutral ground. Not too sure I agree there however. I don't feel we are as neutral at birth as science or psychologist may stipulate. There is alot of unknown in the human mind. The only way they have to study it is by observation. For example, the following person is showing the following symptoms therefore they have the following condition that we have defined by the following criteria. Do they know? no. They are basing their opinion of assumption based on exterior evidence and then if the person "responds" to treatment. Interesting basis. What really puzzles them however is instances that do not fit into their mold and therefore are anomalies. For example. Say you have two individuals who went through similar circumstances of say an abuse. Why do some, seem to recover, while others do not. Why does some develop what they would label a certain disorder, while another does not manifest any of those behaviors. So the slate is not as clean as they may have us believe.

I am not saying that enviroment has no influence. It has a HUGE one. We absord things, process them and apply them internally according to our individual senses. But it is inherant that were ARE limited by these senses. For example, dogs can hear things we cannot. Does that make the sound not exist? No. How do we know that dogs can hear those sounds? Because at one time man happened to figure out a way to measure sound. So it is when these things come into the range of our senses that we are able to establish a connection to them, that we can in turn be able to translate into our world.

This reminds me of When Jesus was talking to Nichodemus. ( I know you have expressed that you don't have evidence for a belief for a higher being,.. but indulge me here...) He was trying to show Nichodemus that his ability to reason and translate the physical was in fact holding him back from understanding heavenly things. How so? Because the human mind from birth is taught to reason on the physical. It has no other frame of reference to base things heavenly because it has been confined to a flesh enviroment. Similar to what you are saying about being born into a preconcieved idea. Nichodemus kept trying to figure out how we could possibly be physically born again, because that was the only way that he was able to understand Jesus words. Was that the only way of seeing it? No. Jesus was trying to help him see things from heavens concept. To do so we have to break out of the physical and go into what his realm and learn from him and what he gives us to hear him, (the helper) the Holy Spirit. This enables us to see what he sees, otherwise we are trapped in a concept of physical (flesh).

He does provide evidence for those who seek him. Ways that he can reach us, so that we can believe and reach out to him in return. He did this while on earth, providing miracles for ones to see. But he didn't do them on demand, for the sake of 'proof', for if that was all they were seeking than a simple miracle would not be enough. Reminds me of when God' voice actually spoke from heaven, and some called it thunder.

I had to smile when you said this:

As for your own experiences, I can't say how I'd feel if I experienced something truly inexplicable. The questions would probably drive me over the edge.

Not sure it would drive you over the edge. :-) But it might force a further shedding of conception, did for me.

I tend to keep my dealings with magic and the occult to a minimum. (I got scared after watching the first Lord of the Rings movie, though ironically I'd play a video game with near-identical themes in a heartbeat.) I've had some weird dreams that I could never explain. I suppose it's possible there are beings that are beyond our known science and comprehension. I always figured these Ouija boards might have some sort of magnet or something inside, some device that moves the thing to spell words, particularly words that might scare people. Perhaps it's the Star Trek in me, that everything that happens must have a scientific explanation.
