To all active and former witnesses (elders especially), I have a question.
My wife wanted to throw a costume party and invite people that she knows who has kids. She indicated that she wanted to include her witness friends as well. However, given the fact that we are in the month of October and costume parties in this month are associated with Halloween, she did not know how to throw a costume party without making it look like a Halloween party. She wanted to make it sort of like a Fall Festival but she clearly sees how others will take it as a Halloween type of bash.
I told her that the local churches tend to do something similar. Have Fall Festivals so that the people who go can have an outlet for this kind of stuff without actually going to a 'Halloween Bash.' I know, I know, it sounds a bit hypocritical and frankly I just go ahead and celebrate Halloween. However, my wife is scared of it in a way due to her feeling like she could be possessed by demons and such. Many Christians feel this way too so I don't find this as ridiculous (given my beliefs) as her thinking she will die for putting up a Christmas tree. However, I know non-religious people will see that as being ridiculous too.
So what do you think? Does she have a chance in even remotely pulling it off or no friggin way possible? Is there anything she could change to make it not seem like a Halloween costume party? She already figured that if she had planned this in the summer then it would look less like a Halloween party. But hey, who has costume parties in the summer?
Anyway, on a side note. A man in our prayer group invited me to his church Wednesday night before Halloween where they are having safe trick or treating. They ask that the kids not wear costumes that are occultic in any way. I told him about a time when a church I use to attend had a costume contest and asked that they all dress as Bible characters. The winner of the costume contest? A little boy of about 3 who dressed as a devil. The man in our prayer group did not like that too well, but hey, isn't the devil a Bible character?
Incidently, since it is already so close to Halloween now, I doubt my wife will have this party for she sees no point in doing it in November.
