It's a religion, dear ones (peace to you!)... really, it is... and simply on its way to looking more like one than like the "non-religion" it has tried for decades to convince eveyone it's not. It must establish itself as that now, just in order to survive. Because the governments want their income taxes and the publishing company ain't doing too well (and will probably do worse as time passes on - NOT due to the economy, but due to technology, which is affecting the publishing industry in general. It's highly unlikely that the WT and AW will do well on Kindle, Nook... or, god forbid, the iPad - 'cause that means they'll also have access to the Internet... as well as other, non-WTBTS books!, and the boyz up in the 'Tower can't risk that!).
"Real" religions don't have bible/book studies in private homes. They are supposed to be FULLY open to the public and so have them at the "church"... so's anyone can come. And so, in order to keep their IRS tax-exempt status... as well as no longer having to worry about individual Study Conductors giving out their own opinions (which may go contrary to WTBTS teachings) to their personal little mini-flocks, it's "best."
The whole pedophile/others things happening in private homes... was just a great excuse and very convenient timing. They aren't protecting anyone but themselves... and their investors. Truly. What one learns in law school about such things (i.e., corporations) is... quite interesting.
Peace!
