I used to pioneer, so I think the main ones spreading these lies about those who leave are the older women and elders' wives, whether they pioneer or not.
I never heard such trash talking than when I was in a car group, day after day.
I never participated in that kind of talk with them and so never fit in.
Doesn’t surprise me one bit. I had a rumor started by a JW family member that I was beating my wife. I honestly believe it was intentionally started to keep the younger woman in our families in fear of ever leaving the cult. "You see what happens when you leave!!! You'll be beaten by your evil apostate husband!!!" There was absolutely no basis in reality for the rumor to be started. I'm a pretty mellow person and my wife and I don't even really argue.

I can't say this is a surprise. With every case of someone being DFd or DAd that I have ever known of, the rumor mill goes crazy. I've heard all kinds of things, from satanism to starting a new religion, to being gay or involved in adultery to winning a huge amount of money at a casino and refusing to give the money back (gambling and greed)...being materialistic, being too prideful, thinking oneself too smart or high and mighty, etc.
It doesn't take much for someone with at least two or three neuronal synpatic connections to figure out that these rumors don't add up given the person or situation. How in the world does it make sense that someone is being disfellowshipped for being gay when the wife was also disfellowshipped at the same time (because her husband is gay? WTH).
I'm guessing you are right that the rumor about you being gay is tied to your gay friends on FB. Who in their right mind thinks having gay friends means someone is gay?
I think though that the idea that having a reputation as a family man being incompatible with being gay isn't necessarily accurate. I'm gay (*gasp*), and I have children...a young family. My youngest is almost a year and a half now. My entire focus is my family. I also happen to be gay. But I'm a...Gay Family Guy. There is such a thing, you know.

Yes, the uglier the rumor the better they like it. They are not interested in the facts. If the DF'd person does indeed have problems, bad behavior, etc. they feel reassured and smug (picture a smirky smile when they whisper about the misfortune of a DF'd one).
One day I will relate the story of how I turned the tables on them and had them gnashing their teeth in frustration within 2 yrs of my DF
They're victims. I get the same sort of crap. Every so often one of the two JW family members that still talks to me is asked by a former friend what church I attend now (they're trying to frame an excuse for an auto-DA since they don't have anything to DF us on).
I go between being angry at them and feeling sorry for them. Usually I feel sorry for them but it's hard to not get angry at times.

honestly a hateful rumor would be a good thing for me right now. that kind of prejudice might help my wife see how loving her beloved "truth" is.
