Ricin comes from the same plant source, I believe...

You are thinking of castor beans. Castor oil comes from them. Canola comes from a different plant.

Most canola oil is made from genetically modified canola; therefore I steer clear of the stuff...I prefer sunflower but that's just my 2c.

The whole idea of this poison being good for you is a scam. I call it "rape oil". Most of the rapeseeds used to make this poison come from genetically modified plants that are not labelled. They had to modify it to limit erucic acid, a poison that most rape oil contains. They changed the name to "canola" to confuse the public at the same time they mis-labelled the stuff "health food".

In fact, most "vegetable" oil is poison. Soy oil is no better, and yet that is what "vegetable oil" is. First, it is genetically modified most of the time and not labelled as such. And, polyunsaturated fats actually turn rancid in the bloodstream. You ever see the crap that forms on the outside of a bottle of vegetable oil after it is opened? This is a polymer of the polyunsaturated fats, and is often formed when it is exposed to oxygen. The same thing happens in the bloodstream, creating clogged arteries. Yet, they blame innocent cholesterol, usually putting patients on blood thinners and statins that do nothing.

Solution? Good old fashioned saturated fats. People used to eat lots of butter, coconut oil, lard, and other highly saturated fats. And, at that time, heart disease was actually rare. You never heard of teenagers with heart disease in those days--even if they survived infections and lived into their 70s and 80s, they rarely had heart disease (or cancer, for that matter). They usually died of infections like pneumonia that had no cure in that day and age, or they would simply wear out and die. These days, more children are waddling around and have heart problems that used to be mostly in people in their 40s and 50s. At the same time, consumption of rape oil (and soy oil) has gone up--all the while, the drug companies continue lying and telling us that such crap is actually good for you.

I personally recommend cutting way back on margarine, shortenings that are made with hydrogenated fats, and all soy and rape oils. Replace these oils with coconut oil, virgin coconut preferably. Olive oil is also recommended, so long as you stay away from forms that are highly processed. Palm and coconut oil, again preferably virgin, are good fats. Butter is also good--margarine is not. As usual, a Google search on coconut oil is always in good order--just beware of those sites that drug companies put up to make saturated fats look bad (fortunately, as apostates, we already have an advantage in being able to detect such crap and find the good sites).

Canola oil comes from rapeseed. The plant is a relative of mustard, radish, cabbage etc. There is absolutely nothing wrong with it, as the harmful element has been bred out. The problem with any oil, is smoke point. That is when the molecular makeup changes, and becomes unhealthy. All oils that reach this point, or go rancid are not good for you. A great oil for higher heat cooking is Grapeseed. Olive Oil for low heat and no heat.
