    Yes, serein, church means place of worship, but not to a JW.

    A JW would argue that, biblically, the word "church" means a congregation of people, not a place of worship, and he/she would be correct. The problem is that we are speaking modern English, not biblical Greek, so there is no need to confine the term to what it meant in biblical times.

    OTWO, I remember my Ex used the word "church" when talking with some non-JW clients from her job. I wonder, was that because she thought they didn't know what a Kingdom Hall was, or was it because she feared they knew exactly what that meant and didn't want them to know?

    When I was a JW if someone asked me if I went to church I would say yes and not correct them. I never called the KH church though, in the 'hood everyone knows what the hall is. Your mom is probably just trying to to "soften" or normalize the cult to your sister.
